Town’s display of Christian faith turns tables on atheist attack on Christmas parade: ‘This has backfired on them’

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group that uses the threat of costly legal action to bully municipalities into conforming to its secular demands, may have seen a recent effort to squash the theme of a Christmas parade backfire in its face.

The “perpetually offended atheists from Wisconsin,” as Fox News’ Todd Starnes likes to call the group, sent the small town of Piedmont, Ala., a letter telling city officials they must “select a more appropriate, more inclusive, and constitutional theme for its holiday parade,” according to ABC 33/44.

“Keep Christ in Christmas” was this year’s planned theme. Heaven forbid that someone might associate Christ with a federal holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.

“[The parade’s theme] sends the message that the City not only prefers religion over non-religion, but also Christianity over all other faiths,” FFRF stated in the letter. “It alienates non-Christians and others in Piedmont who do not in fact have a ‘strong belief in prayers’ by turning them into political outsiders in their own community.”

So the townspeople changed the theme … to “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.”

And the small town parade saw the biggest turnout ever, according to Mayor Bill Baker.

“This anti-religious group that started all this stuff, I really believe this has backfired on them,” Baker told ABC 33/44. “What has happened now is the city of Piedmont, great city to live in, great people, has rallied. They have caused our parade to be bigger and better with more emphasis placed on Christianity.”

Score another one for the good guys.
