It was no Halloween prank.

Authorities are investigating a grisly crime that unfolded Tuesday night when neighbors in a community on Long Island, N.Y., discovered the body of a beheaded woman lying in the street – and her killer committed suicide by jumping in front of a train less than a mile away.

According to the New York Post, neighbors saw the woman’s body about 8 p.m. – the torso on one side of the street, her head on the other.

“I saw the lady laying right in front and her head was across the street, close to the corner,” neighbor Nick Gordon said, according to the Post. “I thought ‘holy sh–!’”

Witnesses at first thought the woman’s body was some kind of Halloween trick, the Post reported, only to find out it was all too real.

“There was blood all over the floor,” Gordon said. “You can see smears going down the stairs… as if somebody were pulling a body.”

The woman is believed to be in her 60s; the man in his 30s. The relationship between the two was not confirmed, but WNBC New York reported the two are mother and son.
