Touching story of elderly man eating every meal with photo of late wife goes viral

An elderly California man’s heartwarming tale is touching many Americans as he unwittingly proves that true love really does exist.

And he probably doesn’t even know he’s become a national sensation!

Madina Bashizadah was having lunch with a friend in Fremont when she spotted the man eating alone, accompanied only by a picture of his late wife. She captured the endearing moment in a photo, and as the saying goes, the rest in history.

The picture he had on display was of a younger man sitting with a woman, which Bashizadah guessed to be his late wife, but she was too moved to ask him.

“When I saw him I got very emotional and started tearing up,” Bashizadah told NBC’s TODAY. “My best friend wanted me to talk to him but I couldn’t without breaking down.”

Others in the restaurant did approach the man and he happily explained that it was his late wife, according to Today. He said they met when they were 17, but that he soon went away to war and didn’t see her again for a decade.

“He had searched for her for 10 years and one day as he was telling his barber the story, the barber calls his daughter in and it end up being her,” Bashizadah said. “They were married instantly and it lasted for 55 years until she passed. He takes her photo everywhere.”

Bashizadah posted the photo on Twitter and was surprised at how popular it became.

“Goes to show you true love does exist and I would love for everyone to know!” she said.

Here are just a few responses from other Twitter users who were touched by the story:
