George Will nails it: From light bulbs to sex lives, ‘this is a government that doesn’t know when to stop’

A government that spends its time worrying about the country’s light bulbs, football teams, and college students’ sex lives simply isn’t capable of handling the challenges of war or deadly diseases, conservative columnist George Will said on Sunday.

And it can’t be trusted by its citizens to do so.

georgewill1005Appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” Will was answering a question Chris Wallace posted to his panel and the viewing audience: “Can we have faith in government?”

Will’s answer was an emphatic – and well reasoned – NO.

“I think we have much more to fear from excessive faith in government than from too little faith in government,” he told Wallace. “You asked, ‘Can we trust the government to do its job?’ What isn’t its job now?”

The Obama administration and Democrat interest groups technically outside government but beholden to it – teachers unions, college administrators and the like – are simply too prevalent in the country today to be close to effective, Will said. And never had the capacity to be effective anyway.

The federal government is “fine tuning the curriculum of our students K through 12, it’s monitoring sex on campuses, deciding how much ethanol we should put in our gas tanks, it has designed our light bulbs, and it’s worried sick over the name of the Washington football team.”

The K-12 reference was to Common Core, the roundly hated effort to revise elementary classroom education nationally, the sex reference was to the current Democrat-inspired panic over an alleged wave of sexual assaults on the nation’s campuses.

“Now, this is a government that doesn’t know when to stop,” Will said. “The distilled essence of progressivism is that government is, A, benign, that it is this disinterested force — that’s false — and, B, it is stocked with experts who are really gifted at doing things.”

Will was bipartisan in his criticism, but not in his conclusion.

“Republicans do this also. Democrats do it in domestic policy, Republicans brought us nation-building and regime change … A common theme is the excessive faith in the skills of government.”

That’s an excessive faith no conservative shares.
