‘Michelle Obama’ and ‘Oprah dollas’? Ode to FLOTUS VMA performance makes ears bleed

A pop culture paean to first lady Michelle Obama got put in its place at Sunday’s Video Music Awards.

And first place it wasn’t.

Painfully plastic girl group Fifth Harmony – as diverse and authentic as a Benetton ad – took to the stage in Los Angeles to for a pre-show performance of “Boss,” an alleged anthem of female empowerment that seems to rely heavily on rhyming the words “Michelle Obama” and “Oprah’s dollas.”

Judging by the Twitter critics, Miley Cyrus’s twerking was a bigger hit in some quarters.

Fifth Harmony won the 2014 Artists to Watch award, but here’s something else to watch:

Does the phrase “my ears are bleeding” mean anything to you?

Well, to be fair, there are a bunch of other lyrics.

But everything seems to come back to:

Boss Michelle Obama
Purse so heavy gettin’ Oprah dollas
Boss Michelle Obama
Purse so heavy gettin’ Oprah dollas
Boss Michelle Obama
Purse so heavy gettin’ Oprah dollas
Boss Michelle Obama
Purse so heavy gettin’ Oprah dollas

Make of that what you will.

Or not.

Suffice it to say, not everyone was thrilled.

CORRECTION: The original version of this post misspelled Miley Cyrus’s first name.
