Conservatives attack Obama for signing new executive order dismissing religious freedom; will lawsuits follow?

Conservative religious groups on Monday attacked President Obama’s latest executive order, accusing the White House of attempting to bully faith-based organizations with moral objections to homosexuality.

When he signed an executive order Monday that protects gays, lesbians and various sub-genres of human sexuality in between from discrimination by federal contractors, President Obama implicitly disregarded the requests of major religious organizations that work with the federal government.

In a letter to the White House in early July, religious groups – including those that generally support Obama – sought an exemption from the planned order, “asking that an extension of protection for one group not come at the expense of faith communities whose religious identity and beliefs motivate them to serve those in need.”

Talk to the hand, Obama answered.

“I’m gonna do what I can with the authority I have,” Obama said, according to Politico. “This is not speculative, this is not a matter of political correctness. People lose their jobs.”

While some liberal religious groups seemed ready to keep drinking the Kool Aid on Monday, conservatives were scathing in their response.

In a statement, the Family Research Council said Obama ordered “employers to put aside their principles and practices in the name of political correctness.”

“This level of coercion is nothing less than viewpoint blackmail that bullies into silence every contractor and subcontractor who has moral objections to homosexual behavior,” the statement said.
