Disturbing new university ‘diversity’ policy: Equally distribute grades to favor minorities

Spring_sort09_4916A new policy at the University of Wisconsin – Madison rewards minorities with unearned grades based solely on their skin color, calling for equal distribution of good grades among students of “underrepresented races,” according to Campus Reform.

The policy, named the “Framework for Diversity and Inclusive Excellence,” was designed so that it “places the mission of diversity at the center of institutional life so that it becomes a core organizing principle,” essentially mandating that everyone gets an ‘A’. This politically correct policy has rendered grades utterly meaningless and is enraging affirmative action opponents.

W. Lee Hansen, an economics professor at UW, is against the framework noting some disturbing issues that were apparently overlooked by administrators who supported this new policy.  In a scathing editorial on the issue, Hansen blames the pro-diversity crowd for conjuring up this plan that includes 30 vague recommendations to further their political agenda.

“Professors, instead of just awarding the grade that each student earns, would apparently have to adjust them so that academically weaker, ‘historically underrepresented racial/ethnic’ students perform at the same level and receive the same grades as academically stronger students,” he wrote in his piece for the Pope Center.

Hansen claims generalized “educational babble” used within the policy could theoretically apply to any student on campus.  Also, the framework potentially puts students at risk of not selecting their desired major by imposing a number of each race on certain majors.

“Suppose there were [sic] a surge of interest in a high demand field such as computer science,” he wrote. “Under the ‘equity’ policy, it seems that some of those who want to study this field would be told that they’ll have to choose another major because computer science already has “enough” students from their ‘difference’ group.”

This policy could be considered the follow-up to affirmative action in university admissions.  A combination of the two inhibits “excellence” with the good grades being a reparation for students of particular races.

UPDATE 7/23: After Hansen’s article was reported on many news sites, the University prepared a statement in response, calling it a misrepresentation. The following is an excerpt, and you can read the entire statement here.

The following is a July 21 statement of Professor Patrick Sims, Chief Diversity Officer and interim vice provost for Diversity and Climate:

The idea that UW-Madison will begin to base student grading or the make-up of programs or majors on race or ethnicity has circulated on the Internet in the wake of a recent opinion column by emeritus UW-Madison Professor Lee Hansen.

Allow me set the record straight: Nothing could be further from the truth.

Regrettably, Hansen’s assertion that the campus’ most recent strategic diversity framework embraces a quota system for apportioning grades by race, is a gross misrepresentation of our current efforts.
