As U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., first elected to the Senate when Jimmy Carter occupied the White House, prepares to add to his 36 years in Washington D.C., his challenger in Tuesday’s “Republican” runoff election has yet to concede.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that supporters of tea party-backed opponent Chris McDaniel are examining Tuesday’s results, looking for people who also voted in a Democratic primary June 3, which would be illegal.

“This is being done to maintain the integrity of the election process and that a fair and honest election was held on behalf of all Mississippians,” McDaniel said in a written statement.

In an appearance on Fox News Thursday evening, McDaniel told Sean Hannity that his campaign has found “widespread irregularities.”

“Tuesday evening the Republican primary in Mississippi was not decided by Republican voters,” he said. “It was decided by 35,000 to 40,000 Democrats. That’s unprecedented and extraordinarily unusual.”

The candidate said they’ve found “more than 1000” potentially ineligible votes in a single county — Cochran won by just 6693 votes.

“We’re looking into the issue of whether or not people who participated in the June 3rd Democratic primary crossed over into the Republican primary this Tuesday night, and we’ve already found more than 1,000 examples of that in one county alone,” McDaniel said.

He also told Hannity that the Cochran campaign resorted to “race baiting, lies and distortion,” saying “they did everything in their power to embrace liberal Democrats… just to win an election.”
