Dispelling months of rumors that he might be willing to head for the exit door, Speaker of the House John Boehner said Tuesday he is “all in” to retain his position as speaker when the new Congress reconvenes next January.
In response to a reporter asking what the future holds for him – Boehner said, “I told my colleagues two weeks ago I was all in. And when I’m all in, I’m all in.”
The AP reports some conservatives last week indicated they would be willing to mount a challenge should Boehner run again – and his return as speaker isn’t guaranteed despite predictions the GOP will hold the House in the November elections.
There is no report that Boehner, known to get emotional at times, shed any tears over the announcement he will seek the speakership again – the same cannot be said for some of his colleagues.
