Actor James Woods gives former Justice Stevens thumbs down on his new book gutting the constitution

Tinkering around with the most fundamental and cherished of our rights isn’t something to be taken lightly. Yet it’s what former U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is suggesting in his new book, and it has actor James Woods thinking something just doesn’t sound right. He tweeted Monday:

The public got a preview of Stevens’ intentions in February, when he revealed that he essentially wanted to strip the meaning from the Second Amendment, by turning the right to bear arms into a quaint expression once used by the Founding fathers. He suggested that the right should only apply to members of state militias.

The title of his newly published book, “Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution,” offers a clear understanding of his thinking.

Stevens isn’t talking about little, insignificant amendments like the 26th, which changed the minimum voting age from 21 to 18. Nope. He wants to tamper with the first 10 amendments — the Bill of Rights, our most basic freedoms, according to USA Today, which listed the changes he’d like to see.

Sounding like a man after President Obama’s heart, Stevens wants to exclude what he deems “unreasonable political donations” from First Amendment freedom of speech protections, according to USA Today.

He’d also like to see language added to the Eighth Amendment so that it expressly defines the death penalty as “cruel and unusual punishment.”

And then there’s the most offensive item on his wish list, to change the 10th Amendment to eliminate states’ sovereign immunity from liability when violating the Constitution or federal law.

Woods’ single tweet was a huge wake up call, and earned him lots of replies, which Twitchy was only too happy to record. They include:
