Magazine reveals Jay Carney’s kitchen decorated with Soviet-era propaganda posters

The magazine Washingtonian MOM did a feature on White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s wife Claire Shipman, and how she manages her “active role as a journalist, wife, and modern working mom.”

Sorry, Ms. Lerner, Trey Gowdy nailed it:
‘Brought BOOM to the ROOM!’

The profile includes a photo of their kitchen that is getting plenty of attention because of what is seen in the background. Prominently displayed on the wall behind the family, minus Carney, are two framed Soviet propaganda posters.

As it turns out, Carney and Shipman have a unique connection to Russia — that is where they met in the 1990s, according to Business Insider. Carney worked at Time magazine’s Moscow bureau and she was with CNN.

Carney also graduated from Yale with a degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies.

So what is the significance of the two posters? Business Insider explains that the photo on the right is “a version of this iconic design by artist Dmitry Moor with a soldier pointing his finger alongside text that says ‘Have YOU Enlisted?’ in Russian.”

The other poster is a female factory worker during World War II that encourages female workers to replace men who’ve gone to fight.

As described by Business Insider:

“The woman in the poster is switching out a tag with a man’s name to one with hers and the text says: ‘Women! Learn production, replace workers who went to the front! The stronger the hinterland – the stronger the front!'”
