A YouTube video depicting a Maine town council meeting serving an area having fewer than 8,000 residents is stirring a local hornets’ nest and generating debate coast to coast due to two of its members’ refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Hampden Council members William Shakespeare and Thomas Brann have refused to rise for the pledge for two months, with Brann claiming it’s being recited at town meetings for political reasons, according to local NBC affiliate WLBZ.
So are Shakespeare and Brann Occupiers? Anarchists? Socialists? They’re none of the above — in fact they’re both veterans.
The two men took their stand, or rather “sit,” at the beginning of the year, when the council began reciting the pledge at meetings for the first time.
When members of the Hampden Association of Land Owners, or HALO, grew tired of seeing what they thought was disrespect for the country, they posted video of them sitting it out on YouTube.
Here’s a question for the two council members: Isn’t pledging allegiance to any country a political statement?
