Dem. lawmaker, co-sponsor of child porn laws, resigns; state office, home raided for child porn

The day after a Democrat Illinois lawmaker cruised to victory in his party’s primary Tuesday, he gave up his seat in the wake of a child pornography raid.

State Rep. Keith Farnham stepped down from representing Elgin, a city about 35 miles northwest of Chicago, days after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided his home and his state office in Springfield.

Items that were seized included the laptop computer Farnham used on the House floor,  The Associated Press reported.

The search warrant sought material that “in any format and medium concerning minors visually depicted while engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” AP reported.

No charges have been filed.

Farnham, 66, has been in office since 2009. In those five years, he has co-sponsored two laws cracking down child pornography: one targeting producers of child porn; the other stiffening penalties for its possession.

In a statement, Farnham attributed his resignation to health problems, though Illinois media reported that, in addition to winning the party’s primary, Farnham’s attendance at legislative meetings so far this session has been perfect.

“I have been battling serious health issues for a number of years and the coming months will require my full attention,” Farnham wrote, according to the Daily Herald, which covers the Elgin area.

No doubt they will. And possibly the coming years as well.

But two things are certain:

Since this is Illinois, the seat is going to remain firmly in Democrat hands. (Local Dem heavyweights are already selecting Farnham’s replacement; he’s not running in the general.)

And since Farnham’s a Democrat, the mainstream media outside Illinois is going to pretend this never happened.
