After Muslim holidays added for NYC schools, group now pushing for halal food

Since adding two new Muslim holidays to the New York City public school calendar was a success, groups are now pushing to add halal food to the school lunch menu.

Mayor Bill de Blasio approved closing schools for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, two Muslim holy days, last month, according to the New York Daily News.

Now the Bangladeshi American Lobby is asking schools to provide halal meals for the 13 percent of students who are Muslim, according to a video posted on Reach NYC.

The video features students who say they have to eat vegetarian meal, which don’t provide adequate protein, or eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Bringing something from home makes them feel different, they say.
