Ted Cruz: Amnesty would destroy GOP chances in 2014 to take Senate

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, blasted the House GOP plan to give undocumented immigrants legal status just short of citizenship, calling it nothing less than “amnesty” and saying it would irreparably harm Republican chances to take over the Senate in 2014.

“I think it would be a mistake if House Republicans were to support amnesty for those here illegally,” Cruz said on Bloomberg TV’s “Market Matters” Thursday.

This week, House Republicans are discussing a proposal that would offer illegal immigrants a path to legal status — but not citizenship. But even that concession would not be enough, according to Cruz.

“In my view, we need to secure the borders, we need to stop illegal immigration,” he said. “And we need to improve and streamline legal immigration.”

Instead of focusing on immigration, Congress’ emphasis should be on what concerns Americans the most: “jobs and economic growth,” he said, adding that the president’s “economic policies aren’t working.”

Cruz also told Breitbart News Thursday that passing immigration reform and caving in on other measures will only hurt Republicans in the 2014 midterms.

“Right now, Republican leadership in both chambers is aggressively urging members to stand down on virtually every front: on the continuing resolution, on the budget, on the farm bill, on the debt ceiling,” Cruz told Breitbart. “Republicans are poised for an historic election this fall — a conservative tidal wave much like 2010. The biggest thing we could do to mess that up would be if the House passed an amnesty bill — or any bill perceived as an amnesty bill — that demoralized voters going into November. Rather than responding to the big-money lobbying on K Street, we need to make sure working-class Americans show up by the millions to reject Obamacare and vote out the Democrats. Amnesty will ensure they stay home.”
