The president’s problem with American exceptionalism

generals_bradley_patton_eisenhower

Lt. Gen. Omar Bradley, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lt. Gen. George S. Patton

Exceptionalism is a term President Obama has trouble ascribing to the United States without saying the Greeks and Brits are equally exceptional. Assuming his mindset is the result of a poor education in American history, allow me to assist.

On Dec. 6, 1941, America had a sleepy, peacetime military and a national sentiment marked by isolationism. On the following morning, the Japanese empire killed that by attacking Pearl Harbor, marking our entry into World War II.

Throughout the following three-and-a-half years, our wartime production went into overdrive. The American industrial might produced in that time 124,000 warships of all types, including 10 battleships, 27 aircraft carriers, 110 escort carriers, 211 submarines and 907 cruisers, destroyers and escorts, according to the National WWII Museum.

U.S. armorers manufactured 41,000 heavy guns and howitzers, 12.5 million rifles and carbines and 41 billion rounds of ammunition.

An estimated 2.4 million vehicles of all types rolled off assembly lines during that short period, including 800,073 2-1/2-ton trucks and 100,000 tanks and armored vehicles. The United States also designed and produced 310,000 warplanes for the war effort.

We poured 434,000 tons of steel to manufacture all this hardware, and milled 36 billion yards of cotton textiles to clothe our servicemen and women.

Our military gallantly fought and won the war on three continents — Europe, Africa and Asia — and time after time, performed the impossible, including Gen. “Jimmy” Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo using 16 B-25s deployed from aircraft carriers.

Nor was the engineering and scientific community idle during this time. In addition to designing new weaponry, navigation systems, bomb sights as well as advanced ships, planes and vehicles of war, the Manhattan Project invented, developed, tested and eventually deployed the world’s first atomic bombs.

Whether they should have been used or not is a question best left for philosophers and theologians. One thing is certain, They put an early end to the war in the Pacific. Germany was also close to developing its own atomic bomb. Had it been first, the war in Europe may have ended very differently.

obama-fail1All this was accomplished by what journalist Tom Brokaw called “The Greatest Generation,” but the truly exceptional nature of its feats was that they were typical in our nation’s history. From our founders thumbing their noses at King George III and the pioneers’ expansion West, to our recovery from a bloody civil war, our emergence as a world power and the space program’s reach for the stars, examples of exceptionalism abound.

All President Obama had to do to continue our nation’s greatness during his own three-and-a-half years of historic opportunity was mind the store. He only had to speak the truth, keep his promises and see that a lousy website got off the ground. He was capable of completing none of these tasks.

When exceptional Americans are given their wings to do exceptional things, a nation is born, a war is won and men even make it to the moon and return to tell the story.

If you were born in Kenya, and were not exceptional in any positive way, you’d have a problem with American exceptionalism too.

  • Dan Poole

You know, at least Vladimir Putin has the balls to say that greatness is in the Russians genes. You “conservatives” make declarations such as “exceptional Americans are given their wings to do exceptional things,” but then you deny that you think Americans are superior or better then other humans. You’re too cowardly to admit your belief that Amurricans are superior to other peoples! But how can Amurricans be exceptional if they aren’t superior?

    • Ronnie Caldwell

They are not superior, but they don’t sit on their ass waiting for someone else to “GIVE” them everything.

      • Dan Poole

By that logic, there are many exceptional nations, for many nations have peoples that work hard to feed themselves and their families. Many nations have people that refuse to sit on their ass. Amurrikans don’t have a patent on working hard. Ergo, by your logic, Amurikans aren’t “exceptional.”

        • disqus_QL1YH2nQC1

@Dan Poole, it is spelled “Americans”

        • OhConservative

          Well, Dan, you sure aren’t

          • Dan Poole

My identity isn’t invested in power, status. and feel-good non-sense like it is for you disciples of Amurrikan Exceptionalism.

          • RobertNorwood

Who are the Amurrikans? I know they are not related to us Americans. But stick around. No doubt our own exceptionalism loathing, hateful, pinheaded liberal progressives will tie us somehow to Aryan superiority issues.

        • RobertNorwood

Somewhere there is a dog is waiting to have a problem solved.

      • disqus_QL1YH2nQC1

        Ronnie, I concur 150%!!!!!

    • tjb

dan poole…..you are definitely not an American….why don’t you move to a country more to your liking instead of simply bitching.

      • Dan Poole

Because I’d rather create a nation of my own liking – and to the liking of millions of other European Americans here in the underworld of the Dark Enlightenment – then abandon ship. North America is my homeland. I don’t intend to give it up.

        • JM Orlando

You clearly despise America and what it stands for, freedom and liberty. I’m not sure what your angle is, but the spirit of this liberty has been present since the 1600′s.

          • OhConservative

Dan, Move to Kenya with all the American haters and live in Ohater’s world of greed, poverty and failure. You do not deserve to live in America. You are a jerk, koolaide drinker, hater and destroyer. I feel about you and your ilk as you do about America.

          • Dan Poole

I got a better idea: Lets dissolve the union that way you can live with your fellow Murikans in glorious diversity and multiculturalism, while folks like me can live in a blood and soil ethnostate where our identity is organic and real.

“You do not deserve to live in America.”

You don’t either, and you’re going to find that out within the next 30 years when your race becomes a minority and the entire country resembles Mexico + Detroit. Election after election, as non-whites vote in crushing numbers for the Democrats, you’re gonna wonder why your message of “limited government” and “tax cuts” doesn’t appeal to them. By the time you figure it out – if you figure it out at all – it will be too late.

You can’t be a White Christian and an American as well. The two contradict each other. Only non-whites can be Americans. It’s their country, not yours (or mine).

          • Dan Poole

“You clearly despise America and what it stands for, freedom and liberty.”

Guilty as charged. For one thing, Amurrika isn’t unique or exceptional for standing for either of those things. But moreover, any “nation” based on utopian propositions are born to die. Real nations such as Russia, Germany, Norway, China, and Japan are connected by blood, not by failed propositions. And yes, freedumb failed. Liberals are just taking freedumb to its logical conclusion.

“the spirit of this liberty has been present since the 1600′s.”

Indeed it has. The Puritans were batspit crazy lunatics who were rightfully despised by the normal people of England back at home. Puritan culture became the blue print for modern liberalism and its devotion to the unholy religion of “equality.” Their brand of Christianity, which was insane as it was, later devoured itself in the 1800s and mutated into atheism, just like the Amurrikan Experiment of 1776 mutated into the modern totalitarian, anti-white, anti-Christian police state. The United States is what a nation looks like when a degenerate cult somehow manages to create a country in its image.

I hate Amurrka because it is the enemy of my race, my Faith, my culture, my civilization, and my way of life.

Americans are not superior but they are ambitious because they are free. America is blessed by God and that makes us exceptional and extra ordinary.

      • Dan Poole

Are you saying Amurrika is the only nation that’s “free?” According to the Heritage Foundation, America doesn’t even rank in the top 10 in economic freedom! Yet you claim Amurrikans are “exceptional” because we are “free”? Non-sense! Bu your own standards, that argument is invalid!

Moreover, LOTS of people all over the world are ambitious. The Mexicans are extremely ambitious. That’s why so many of them come over here for the much ballyhooed “better life.” The East Asians are even more ambitious. Amurrikans don’t have a patent on ambition or freedom, which means Amurrikans can’t possibly be “exceptional” based on that criteria.

Your use of “Amurricans” shows you are neither exceptional nor superior. In the past democrats and republicans worked together to make America great. That is a thing of the past. BHO has encouraged division between leftists and conservatives. It is helping to destroy free America, as are the PC police.
One of the things that makes America exceptional is the way we have helped countries we’ve been at war with recover and prosper.

      • Dan Poole

I reject American Exceptionalism. I’m just saying that “exceptional” and “superior” are synonymous. Just ask Barack Obama’s friend, Merriam Webster:

Exceptional: better than average : superior

        http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/exceptional

You conservatives love to claim that Americans are “exceptional,” but then you deny Americans are “superior”? Non-sense! You guys fancy the Amurrikan people superior to everyone else in the world, but you’re too much of a coward to explicitly say so because you also want to cling to the liberal belief in the “equality” of all humans. You want to believe in superiority and equality at the same time! Whose politically correct now?

As for your trite about “helping other countries,” you DO know all of Europe hates this country, right? Ditto with the Middle East…and Japan…and Korea…and Vietnam…and literally every other nation/region that the U.S. has gone to war with. Go ahead and snob at them for being “ungrateful,” but when literally every race, religion, and ethnic group thinks you haven’t been helpful, then you haven’t been helpful! Which means…Amurrika isn’t exceptional. OUCH! (=

        • 19Robes50

I wonder where the world would be if we just settled back and “Screw them!” That typhoon destroyed you? Fix it! It’s not our problem. Or, you guys are enduring the worst famine in history? Tough noogies! We’re doing just fine.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that America shares it’s greatness with the world, and yet, when the recipients of that greatness turn around and spit upon us, or burn our flag, or murder the very emissaries that have been sent to assist them… Screw them!

We don’t do that! That is our greatness.

          • Dan Poole

I’m confused. On one hand you claim that Amurrika’s “greatness” comes from wasting money on third world nations hurt by unfortunate events, but on the other hand you (correctly) claim that those nations spit in our faces, so we should be like, “screw them.” Which is it?

          • 19Robes50

Judging by your usual worthless meanderings, I can understand your confusion. America helps just about every nation that may need it, however, when those nations take our aid, take our food, accept our largess, and then turn around and screw us, spit upon us, kill our emissaries, and then come back to us for more, it’s time to say, “Screw you!”

I don’t think there is any room for confusion in that statement.

    • John Stuart Mill

The SYSTEM of Individual Sovereignty and LIMITED GOVERNMENT was superior, nimrod.

As it’s been chipped away since FDR America has demonstrated less and less exceptionalism, least of all now. Have you noticed the economy stinks?

Singapore is exceptional now. So is China. They have 17% and 21% Government control of GDP. We have 40%. THAT IS WHY THEY ARE GROWING AND WE ARE NOT….

      http://workforall.net/files/Size_of_government.gif

      • Dan Poole

I would question whether limited government is actually a superior system, but in any case, the only race that believes in limited government is White people. All the other races, including Asians, love big government. And hell, most Whites prefer big government too. We like our pensions, healthcare, and work place safety rules. What we don’t like is sharing it with undeserving non-whites.

        • John Stuart Mill

Ummm … Singapore and China are in Asia.

I won’t deign to respond to the racism.

          • Dan Poole

Did I say anything that was factually incorrect? 95% of blacks, 74% of Asians, and 71% of Hispanics voted for Obama in 2012. Obama explicitly favors big government. Ergo, non-whites support big government. Non-whites vote overwhelmingly for the party of big government in election after election. It’s a matter of fact that they support big government. By contrast, 58% of Whites voted for Romney – a higher percentage then voted for Reagan in 1980. That should tell you something.

    • disqus_QL1YH2nQC1

Stand down and be nice! You know as well as I that Americans are wonderful people. The problem happened when obama became prez. and the world thought he was representing us! He’ll no!

          Dan Poole,
First off, I was being a bit silly. Second, this Country USED to be a very beautiful and envied Country. The corruption has been in long standing. I’ve never been a “political”
person until about half way through to baby Bush’s reign. And this once beautiful Country is ever so slowly becoming a Socialistic, Communistic night mare. I pray daily that Obama will step down, and let a Constitutional man in the white house.
Don’t take life so serious Dan, we won’t be here forever. People are people anywhere. But with hope and a prayer, our Country will be restored. Have a splendid day.

Oh and as for the locked garages and home doors, you better believe it. • OhConservative

Conservatives do not deny American Exceptionalism, Dems, progessives & libs deny. Conservatives are proud of our accomplishments. Only since Ojerkoff have Americans stopped being superior

      • Dan Poole

It’s not that you deny exceptionalism, per say, its that you deny what exceptionalism entails, which is superiority over other humans in other nations.

        • John Stuart Mill

Does it mean one thing? Are you sure?

Projection fail, at least on me. I believe America is Exceptional because of its national government was built around the concept of Individual Liberty and Legitimacy from the People, not a monarch.

Rare for day; a first, in fact … and amazing results while it lasted.

          • Dan Poole

If that’s your definition, then America ceased to be exceptional the moment other nations in Europe embraced individual liberty, which is exactly what they did over the course of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Exceptionalism also entails uniqueness, and America is not unique for having embraced individual liberty or legitimacy from the people. Certainly you can’t deny that European nations are democracies and that the individuals of those nations have rights.

    • RobertNorwood

How can a dog hump himself? We, rather I, only say that our system allows people to be exceptional. Of course, people who are themselves exceptional in some way can do exceptional things. I don’t know where you got your little premise about us but it is wrong headed. Work on the dog’s little problem, perhaps you’ll have better success.

  • Richard Frogman

Obama has no idea what America is all about or how Americans are exceptional people if the government would but out. Obama was raised by a Marxist and was mentored by Reverend Wright. I use the word, reveraed loosly. He is no Reverend. Obama told us he was going to transform America. He is doing that! We just did not know what that transformation was going to be. Well know we know. Transform to a socialist dictatorship. Obama hates this country and is doing everything he can to destroy it. I just wonder how long we are going to allow him to continue on his distructive path.

We are exceptional at imprisoning people, and if you foreigners don’t like it, you must hate our freedom!

    • Winter Hope

Let’s open a new topic…like….I feel since our prisons are so full, acc we tax payers are providing three hots and a cot, I believe we need to bring back the DEATH PENALTY.
What do you think? Why should we pay, both monies and lives (when these creeps are set free), when we didn’t do anything? That’s my thoughts, and I’m sticking to it. :)

      • Cris Bessette

Our prisons are full of non-violent offenders for the most part. This is because of the immoral money wasting drug war.

Duh, don’t put people in there in the first place for having a health issue.

Where did you learn your morals? Some North Korean dictator?

        • Winter Hope

          Chris Bessette,

WTH? Are you normally this stupid? Why would I include ANYONE that is in prisons for non violent crimes?? Obviously, this is meant for hardcore, violent offenders. That’s why I said “Why should we pay, both monies and LIVES (when these creeps are set free), when we didn’t do anything?”

Calm your jets Cris, you appear as if you’re looking for an argument. And although I do love a well conducted forum, even a bit of eye scratching, and tongue biting, you’re not going to find that I will argue with you on this topic. Pick someone else. If someone is an “armed” anything, a child molester, a child abuser, a wife beater, an elderly person/s abuser, terrorists against America, gang members, I don’t care how old they are. I’d give them 5 minutes to make it right with their maker and then quickly and painlessly put a bullet in their head.Have a great and wonderful day!
          WH

          • Cris Bessette

IT wasn’t clear from your previous post about “violent criminals”. .

One problem with execution is that innocent people have been executed before. Execution is more revenge than punishment. It’s barbaric and lowers us to the level of the killers and sickos.

On the other hand, some sickos just need killin’.

So, admittedly I vacillate on this issue depending on the situation.

          • Winter Hope

Cris, here’s more on my thoughts.

            DEATH PENALTY

On the thought of capital punishment being a deterrent…

We Americans, judiciary system, are not consistent. So why would it deter anyone?

“It has been hard to measure capital punishment as a deterrent to murder in the U.S. because it is administered infrequently,” explains Greenberg. “By contrast, in Trinidad and Tobago, the chances of actually being executed have historically been much higher.”

            http://prodpinnc.blogspot.com/2012/03/death-penalty-saving-more-innocent.html

Yes, I agree that innocent people have been executed. But, I also believe that if a murderer is not sentenced to execution, then his parole does nothing for him, he goes out and kills again. So, in a matter of speaking, executions could actually save innocent lives!

Capitol punishment or the death penalty is a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. The judicial decree that someone be punished in this manner is a death sentence, while the actual process of killing the person is an execution. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences. The term capital originates from the Latin capitalis, literally “regarding the head” (referring to execution by beheading).
