Kids cards for veterans refused; ‘Merry Christmas,’‘God bless you’ not allowed!

Students at a North Texas elementary school got a lesson in political correctness when they discovered that a Dallas VA hospital doesn’t allow the phrase “Merry Christmas” on Christmas cards sent to veterans. Um, they’re Christmas cards.

The kids at Grace Academy in Prosper spent Friday making the cards with plans to hand deliver them on Monday, according to Dallas-Fort Worth Fox WDFW.

“I’m hoping that it might make their day because their family might live far away, and they might not have somebody to celebrate Christmas with and I’d like them to know they’ve not been forgotten and somebody wanted to say thank you,” said fourth grader Gracie Brown to the local Fox station.

Gracie and her brother, Luke, each made Christmas cards for the vets, and proudly showed them off.

“It includes ‘Merry Christmas,’ and when you open it up, it says ‘Thank you for your service’ and the American flag,” said Luke.

But their excitement over doing a good deed was short-lived when they were told that their cards wouldn’t pass muster — no “God bless you,” no religious references, not even a “Merry Christmas” are allowed.

Gracie and Luke’s mom, Andrea, was incensed.

“This wasn’t the country I grew up in, when you couldn’t say ‘Merry Christmas,’ you couldn’t say ‘God bless you’ or reference any scripture,” she said.

Susan Chapman, a math teacher at Grace Academy, is married to a veteran and came up with the idea.

“It really didn’t occur to me there would be a problem with distributing Christmas cards,” Chapman told the station.

She got the bad news when she called Monday morning to schedule the delivery.

“I told him my students made cards, we’d like to bring them down for the veterans,” said Chapman. “And he said, ‘That’s great. We’re thrilled to have them, except the only thing is, we can’t accept anything that says ‘Merry Christmas’ or ‘God bless you’ or any scriptural references because of all the red tape.’”

I agree with Gracie and Luke’s mom — this isn’t the country I grew up in either.

    I work with Veterans everyday and we receive hundreds of cards and letters from schools several times a year and then we send them on to share with troops overseas. I have never received a complaint from any Verteran. My husband is a Vietnam Veteran, and is a past post and district commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he is outraged by this. We have a number of volunteers form the LAVFW who send alot of time serving Veterans at the Dallas Medical Center. We recently had a Chrismas dinner and party for over 30 homeless Veterans and they were not offended by ‘Merry Christmas’ or ‘God bless you’ or any scriptural references because of all the red tape.’” In fact they all said to us as they were leaving, “God Bless You and Have a very Merry Christmas.” And from the Veteans and the Auxiliaries at OUR Post God Bless our Troops and God Bless America. Merry Christmas!

          Atheists and Muslims are attacking Christians here and everywhere and you throw a blanket on other religions, who? The Jews, blame the Jews right!
          Atheists and Muslims are the ones!!
          And my position is from facts not ignorance like you posted!
          Liberals love imposing laws against Christians wherever possible! You can’t say “Christmas” by new Pentagon rules, who is in charge now? OBAMA you dunce!!!

        • PhilChance

          re. “……without paying a price”. The insider who shares the list will pay not only by losing the trust of the veterans but perhaps also their job and will be lucky if not charged. Semper Fi.

      Don’t be too outraged it turned out to be another total fabrication from Fox news… When are people going to learn not to reprint Fox news story’s unless they can actually verify them first.. They are indeed allowed to take cards that say “Merry Christmas” or “God Bless you”

      Now if the card has an overt religious statement then out of curtisy for the vets the staff ask the vet before handing them a card what religion they are so they can give the proper cards to the proper vets.. In other words insure happy hanukkah cards go to Jews and cards referencing Jesus go to Christian, sounds reasonable to me..

      They do this exact same thing at children hospitals through out the country. So once again this Fox news story is a complete fabrication, turning out to be nothing but propaganda attempting to lend credibility to this none existent war on Christmas that fox keeps pushing

      Just more Fox News propaganda

      From The North Texas.VA
      First, we would like to state that the VA greatly appreciates donations made by students and organizations on behalf of our Veterans and we will always accept cards for our patients who celebrate Christmas. We would like to clarify the process though in which VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) handles religious/spiritual donations. All forms of holiday donations are received every year and recorded through Voluntary Services. A multi-disciplinary team led by Chaplaincy services reviews holiday cards and determines if the cards contain religious/secular material within them and in the event they do – our Chaplains distribute them by asking patients on a one-on-one basis if they will accept a holiday card with religious references.

      Our Veterans enlisted in the military with the understanding they may be called to fight for our freedoms. One of those freedoms is our freedom to practice a religion of our choice free of persecution. As a federal agency that provides health care to our Nation’s Veterans, it is our duty to uphold and respect the fact that our Veterans are from all faiths and backgrounds and we must honor their sacrifices by making sure we approach religious donations through highly trained VA Chaplains and seek patient approval before distribution.

      That is the same thing that I thought after reading this article. Thanks for posting that, Dan, but unfortunately for you that post of yours doesn’t do a darn thing to substantiate your claim that FOX News “lied”.
            In fact, your post makes it very clear that the VA does NOT permit people to give Christmas cards to the vets, just as the original news article stated! On the contrary, the Christmas cards must be vetted by a committee first!

          • Scott W

            What exactly is offensive about a service member of Jewish faith getting a card for his faith? If anything the VA is going an extra mile to make sure that service members get a card that will speak to their own religious beliefs. And some of those service members might prefer no religious message at all; but somehow THAT isn’t a freedom worth protecting.

          • Dr. Dan

            This isnt restricted to just cards they don’t allow people to just walk into the VA and allow them to roam the halls unescorted disturbing patients for the purpose of distributing any type of items…

            The cards aren’t vetted they are sorted by clerics to be handed out to the proper vets ..This is nothing new this is the way its been handled for at least 30 years that I know of

    WTF is going on in this country????

    • mrunpc

      Simple. It’s called Communist infiltration at every level.

      Google: “The 45 Stated Communist Goals To Take Over America” and read the list. It’s right out of the “democrat” party playbook and has been taking place at least since the 1960s.

      Visit: http://www.cpusa.org, The Communist Party Of America website and see how they support democrats, obama, and government labor unions.

      That should tell you about all you need to know.

        mrunpc thank yoy for posting that web site. Every American should read and compare to what the fake president is doing to us and our country. The fake president is following in Hitlers foot steps and we Americans are the Jews.

          You are very welcome…and thank you for caring.

          Every chance I get, I comment on these politically related article to try to illustrate the best way I know how, the destruction taking place at the hands of these domestic terrorists called “democrats”.

          Because they control nearly all of the media outlets, school systems/universities, courts, labor unions, the ONLY way we have any chance of defeating them is by educating anyone willing (and sometimes unwilling) to listen.

          Anyone who truly loves this country and their liberty, as I do, should be appalled at what “democrats” have become.

        I’ll save everyone the trouble. Here is the communist play book. Read it and see how far down in the dodo we are. [From "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen] 1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war. 2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war. 3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength. 4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war. 5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites. 6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination. 7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N. 8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev’s promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N. 9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress. 10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N. 11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.) 12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party. 13. Do away with all loyalty oaths. 14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office. 15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States. 16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights. 17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks. 18. Gain control of all student newspapers. 19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack. 20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions. 21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures. 22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.” 23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.” 24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press. 25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV. 26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.” 27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.” 28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.” 29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis. 30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.” 31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over. 32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture–education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc. 33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus. 34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities. 35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI. 36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions. 37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business. 38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat]. 39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals. 40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce. 41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents. 42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems. 43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government. 44. Internationalize the Panama Canal. 45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

        AND HERE IS YET ANOTHER “LITTLE” BIT OF EVIDENCE RE: THE USURPER SQUATTING IN OUR WHITE HOUSE:

        FROM WND.COM
        Why couldn’t Healthcare.gov validate Obama’s identity?

        Bombshell in attempt to sign up president for insurance plan.

        NEW YORK – The White House appears to have dropped a bombshell when it explained to the press why White House staff in Washington enrolled President Obama in Obamacare instead of Obama himself.

        Officials said it was because HealthCare.gov could not verify Obama’s identity.

        Here is what Ed Henry, Fox News White House correspondent, reported on air:

        “Somebody who’s not waiting in line to enroll is the president of the United States. We learned today from the White House. Initially, they said he signed up for what they called a bronze plan, paying about four hundred dollars a month in premiums. But, then they came back to us and said – ‘Well, wait. He didn’t actually enroll. They said his staff did
        it and that’s because of his unique circumstance obviously, as commander-in-chief, that his personal information is not in various government databases, so Healthcare.gov could not actually verify his
        identity, oddly enough. So, he had to do it in person this weekend, so he was signing up for the D.C. exchange, but his staff did it.”

        A CBS report in Washington, likewise, explained White House staff had to go to an “in-person” Obamacare site to sign up Obama for coverage.
        Read more at http://www.wnd.com/2013/12/why-couldnt-healthcare-gov-validate-obamas-identity/#5GUfGlokjAvr6blV.99

        The Fox News report, noted by the Gateway Pundit, set off a round of speculation on the Internet.

        What information was so sensitive for Obama that it had to be excluded from government databases?

        Clearly, the information was not his Social Security Number or his birth records, because the White House has claimed to have made public both.

        On May 5, 2010, WND published a report
        documenting that WND researchers were able to find, through an ordinary search of the Social Security database online, the Social Security Number Obama has been using.

        In the same article, WND also reported Obama was using a Social Security Number set aside by the Social Security Administration for applicants with addresses in Connecticut. Public records, meanwhile,
        provide no evidence Obama ever had an address in the state.

      When I originally read your post, I thought you said, why not just ACCEPT the cards and be done with it. That would be the courteous thing to do. But by not accepting the cards, period, it is a slap in the face of all those children trying to spread some cheer to the vets. I am Christian, but I am NOT offended when I receive ANY other religious or non religious holiday greetings. I believe political correctness has become a sickening disease in this country. No one dares say anything anymore because they are afraid someone might be offended. I agree. This is NOT the country I grew up in. Proud mom of an Army vet, and two current full time Army members.

    As a former US Navy Veteran I am beyond outraged! ANY US Veteran I know would be thrilled to get a card that said “Merry Christmas and God bless you!” A wise man once said… “You won’t find an Atheist in a fox-hole.” I’d be willing to bet you won’t find any serving either.

    • kk164
      • tiffsgrandma

        You are wrong …. As an Atheist, I and my friends would not mind a card saying any of those words. We look at it as it is the thought that counts and some I know overseas wouldn’t mind at all….And they are :in the foxhole” so too speak.

        • kk164

          I take it you cannot read. I said nothing about minding getting such a card. I corrected the obvious BS about there being no atheists (no need to capitalize the word, BTW) in the military (the proverbial foxhole).

          • BluebeardOne

            kk164, you are indeed a simpleton.

        • Bethaney Riley

          As an atheist, do you believe in anything?

          • kk164

            Many things. None of which I care to waste time discussing with you.

          • Graywolf12

            Are you ashamed of your beliefs? If you will not discuss them and back up why you have them there is a problem Houston.

          • RealityAlwaysBites

            Choosing not to believe in a made up being that murders babies and keeps slaves is a intelligent choice. Choosing actions beneficial to all mankind is a very NON religious act.

            Religious believers are full of hate while they lie to you about love, they steal from the poor and build gaudy palaces to worship power and money.

          • https://agoldstardad.wordpress.com/ Fozzy

            He’s not ashamed of his beliefs as explaining why he is an atheist would probably never be accepted by the judgemental twats that seem to always appear when these stories come up. Like it or not, religion is finally but far too slowly dying off as the middle eastern mythologies should. Secondly, you don’t deserve an explanation as you are obviously just being a twat

          • kk164

            I see no need to get into pissing contests with skunks. This topic stands by itself; try to fight your limited attention span and stay on it. Find your non sequiturs elsewhere.

          • joe

            You define your philosophy, your badge, by not believing in something. You venemously drone on about God being a baby killer and religious people being mean. You are defined by what you don’t believe in therefore the concept must exist for you.to complain about. Its amazing that after 14 billion years a “genius” like you had it all figured out in o lifetime! What else dont you believe in do we can talk some more. I dont believe in pink flying elephants. You should see my stationary and manifestos against them.

    This is NOT the country I grew up in. Do you STILL like your change?

    • RealityAlwaysBites

      A two party Kleptocracy doesn’t bring change, it brings tyranny, slavery of poor working for rich psychopaths.

    • Pete Backlund

      yes i do. And i don’t like tea bag morons.

      • Scooter Tramp

        and just what makes you think I’m a Tea bagger?

    This is beyond words. What is wrong with you people ?????? Leave the tradition of this Country alone. As a veteran I am disgusted in the idiots that are involved in this Stupid Stuff. Those involved should be fired o n the spot. We are a Christian Nation .You idiots want something else move to the Middle East.

    • kk164

      Wrong, again.

      “the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion”

      Treaty of Tripoli, /s/ John Adams, 1797

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tripoli

      • Christy

        Anyone stupid enough to actually reference Wikipedia shows their lack of intelligence and lack of knowledge in history.

        • kk164

          Anyone stupid enough to not already know about the Treaty of Tripoli is too stupid to draw air unassisted.

          Funny, how right-wing morons can’t accept facts…

            Again kk164, you are a simpleton.

            Seems a lot more intelligent than half of those claiming to be Americans on here.

          • RealityAlwaysBites

            You seem to be stealing the dunces cap and thrusting in on your own head somewhat zealously.

            Did your imaginary friend tell you to call people names?

          • Bethaney Riley

            If you believe what you read, read this. Hell is a reality and our time on earth is a blink of an eye as compared to eternity. Those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour, will spend eternity in hell. I am not judging, just stating a fact.

          • kk164

            ROTFLMAO!!!

            You’d be funny if you were not so pathetic. And such a common example of the sorry level of America intelligence…

          • joe

            Is part of the great Atheistic humanistic creed to berate and condemn those that dont NOT believe with you. I mean really , what do stand for besides nothing?

          • RealityAlwaysBites

            So your hateful god believes in infinite punishment for finite sin…. ya real loving….. ha ha, more like a hateful child’s imaginary friend.
            oooh you’re mean to me, my big bad friend will burn you up.

        • Tracy A. Goode

          Actually, Wikipedia has spent a lot of time cleaning up their act. They are becoming more and more a credible source. Regardless, kk164 is right. The founding fathers deliberately left God out of the Constitution, over the objections of several ministers, so that our country would be one of Law, not of Theocracy. This is not the same as saying that God does not exist for the country, or that we should not live Godly lives. What it means is that each of us may choose what we believe in, and worship accordingly. Remember, they came from a time when the Anglican Church was the sole authority on God, and any other way of belief was wrong. Then, too–which Christian God would have been the right God? The one of the Puritans of Massachusetts? The Catholic God of Maryland? The Baptist God of the South? The Quaker God? The Methodist one? Yes, He is the same God–but each of us worship Him differently. And those who believe in no god, or one of the elder gods? In a Theocracy, they have no rights. The United States, however, offers ALL the right to choose how they worship and whom, because we ARE A NATION BASED ON LAW. And Thank GOD for it.

      • Ken Ducky Smith

        I agree with Christy regarding the so named Wikipedia. As a scholar of college, when taking any class in writing, whether it be essays, research writing or other; one better not cite or reference anything from Wikipedia. Anyone who knows or even thinks they know the facts about something, can edit or add to the topic, whether it is true or not. Any college or university professor will never instruct students as Wikipedia as a reliable resource. And as for the treaty you speak of, you yourself dated it 1797, which is 21 years AFTER the Declaration of Independence was signed.

        • kk164

          I’ll grant you the timing, dumbass. Now, show how it is invalidated.

          PS I’m a college professor. If your critical thinking skills are as dull as they appear, you fit in perfectly with the other right-wing nutcases posting here.

          • Graywolf12

            A college professor ??? yup and I am the POPE. Your choice of words especially derogatory ones gives you away as a troll.

          • kk164

            Hardly. They reflect the reality that dweebs like you refuse to acknowledge.

          • joe

            You’re a college professor? With that vocabulary? With a mind so closed? No wonder kids are graduating without the ability to think for themselves or meta congnate. I can just picture you ranting and raving with your little mortarboard on lol.

        • RealityAlwaysBites

          Most of those moving to the USA were fleeing religious persecution, the zealots had taken over in Europe.

      • joe

        Boy you really are ignorant…you know nothing about the founding fathers and you find one wiki lol to make yer case.

        “Now I will avow, that I then believe, and now believe, that those general Principles of Christianity, are as eternal and immutable, as the Existence and Attributes of God; and that those Principles of Liberty, are as unalterable as human Nature and our terrestrial, mundane System.”
        –Adams wrote this on June 28, 1813, excerpt from a letter to Thomas Jefferson.

        • Corey

          Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine

          The First Four Presidents of the USA and Paine

          ~~~~~~~~~~~
          George Washington, First President of USA:
          “The United States of America should have a foundation free from the influence of clergy.”
          “As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.”
          “The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation,” Washington wrote. “All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent national gifts. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.”
          A near-contemporary, the Rev. Dr. Bird Wilson, “perused every line that (President George) Washington ever gave to the public and (did) not find one expression in which he pledges himself as a believer in Christianity. … He was a Deist and nothing more.” Wilson judged all of the first six presidents to be “infidels.”
          ~~~~~~~~~~~

          John Adams, Second President of the USA, was First Vice President under First President George Washington

          “As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.” ~ Tripoli of Barbary. Art. 11. – Authored by American diplomat Joel Barlow in 1796, the following treaty was sent to the floor of the Senate, June 7, 1797, where it was read aloud in its entirety and unanimously approved. John Adams, having seen the treaty, signed it and proudly proclaimed it to the Nation.

          “The Judeo-Christian religion is the most bloody religion that ever existed.” Adams’ treaty with Tripoli specified that the American government “is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.”

          ~~~~~~~~~~~
          Thomas Jefferson, Third President of the USA and Vice President to Second President John Adams
          “Religions are all alike — founded upon fables and mythologies.”
          “Let us, then, fellow citizens, unite with one heart and one mind. Let us restore to social intercourse that harmony and affection without which liberty and even life itself are but dreary things. And let us reflect that having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled, we have yet gained little if we counternance a political intolerance as despotic, as wicked, and capable of a bitter and bloody persecutions.”
          “The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts as are only injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”
          “Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.”
          “The Christian god is a three-headed monster, cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three-headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.”
          “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.”
          “The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.” ~ Thomas Jefferson wrote, in a letter to John Adams (April 11, 1823)
          ~~~~~~~~~~~

          James Madison a.k.a. ‘The Father of the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Fourth President of the United States:

          “The number, the industry, and the morality of the Priesthood and the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the Church and the State.”

          “The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries.”

          “Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise.”

          ~~~~~~~~~~~
          Thomas Paine, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Most famous for ‘The Age of Reason’ (1794) and ‘Common Sense’ (1776). He immigrated to the British American colonies in 1774 in time to participate in the American Revolution:
          “The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion”.
          “Of all the systems of religion that were ever invented, nothing is more … repugnant to reason … than this thing called Christianity.”
          “It is from the bible that man has learned cruelty, rapine, and murder, for the belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man, and the bible is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind”
          “All national institutions of churches whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit. … My own mind is my own church.” ~ Thomas Paine ‘The Age of Reason’ (1794)
