Republicans send ‘Lie of the Year’ trophies to vulnerable Dems

GOP trophyThe Republican National Committee sent “Lie of the Year” trophies to vulnerable Democratic senators in states the GOP is targeting in the 2014 elections. To add insult to injury, the trophies were made in China.

Taking a cue from the “Lie of the Year” award PolitiFact bestowed on President Obama for his oft-repeated, “If you like your plan, you can keep it” mantra, Republicans are reminding Democratic lawmakers that the president wasn’t the only one who repeated the pledge. They did, too.

Although senators like Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu are frantically trying to take those words back (and throwing the president under the bus in the process), the GOP is putting them on notice that they’re not going to let them get away with the subterfuge, according to BuzzFeed.

Democratic leaders like U.S. Reps. Nancy Pelosi of California and Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid claim their party will proudly campaign on Obamacare in 2014. But that’s easy for them to say. Pelosi and Wasserman Schultz represent safe districts, and Reid won’t be up for re-election until 2016.

Those in the trenches know better. U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Wednesday that the Affordable Care Act’s glitch-ridden implementation is causing elected officials “to tear [their] hair out,” The Hill reported.

And the public blames the entire fiasco on the Democratic Party. There isn’t a single Republican lawmaker who voted for the act, and there isn’t a single Democratic lawmaker who didn’t.

BuzzFeed reported that targeted Democrats acknowledge receiving their gifts, saying:

A Democratic source said the trophies have been sent to the offices of all the top Republican targets for defeat in next year’s Senate elections. The trophy lists the name of the targeted Democratic Senator with “Lie Of The Year” inscribed below it.

Underneath the trophies are the words, “Base Made In China.”

“We ordered trophies from a company in Edgewood, N.Y.,” said Kirsten Kukowski, spokesperson for the Republican National Committree, according to BuzzFeed “The Democrats lied to their constituents and told them they could keep their doctor. They should focus on how they are going to come clean to their constituents ahead of their elections.”
