Good guy with gun: Burglar calls 911 for help after homeowner shoots him

ToledoNewsNow.com: News, Weather

A burglar called 911 last week after being shot and wounded by the owner of a Toledo, Ohio, home he was trying to rob.

Randy Estrada, 21, shattered the front window in an attempt to break into the home of Antione Garretof, 34, and his girlfriend at about 5 a.m. on Dec. 5. The noise awakened Garretof, who grabbed a handgun and ran downstairs, where he saw the would-be burglar crawling through the window, according to Toledo News Now.

Saying the incident was “like a scene from a movie,” the homeowner fired several shots at Estrada, who immediately retreated through the window.

Estrada called 911 shortly afterwards to report that he had just been shot. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. He has since been released from the hospital, arrested and charged with burglary.

“If someone’s breaking into your house and you fear for your safety, you have the right to defend yourself and your family,” Sgt. Joe Heffernan told Toledo News Now. “And in this case, that’s what we believe Mr. Garret has done.”
