‘It’s nuts!’ Fox’s Gretchen Carlson furious at beer can pole joining Nativity in Fla. Capitol

The spokesman for a national atheists group told Fox News personality Gretchen Carlson on national television on Tuesday that Christianity “stole the season from Solstice.”

On Wednesday, a self-proclaimed “militant atheist” who placed a farcical holiday pole made of beer cans in Florida’s Capitol told local news cameras that the Nativity scene erected there last week “needs to go.”

And liberals keep saying there’s no “war on Christmas?

On “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson,” Carlson was outraged by the plans to place the so-called Festivus pole in the Capitol rotunda to compete with a nearby Nativity scene.

“Why do I have to drive around with my kids to look for a nativity scenes and be, like, ‘Oh, yeah, kids, look, there’s baby Jesus behind the Festivus pole made out of beer cans!’ It’s nuts!”

Peter Donohue, president of the Catholic League, agreed.

“We don’t have to have the Klan out there on Martin Luther King Day with their monuments right next to a bust of Martin Luther King,” he said. “We don’t want to have neo-Nazis out there to stick it to Jews on Yom Kippur. And we shouldn’t have people out there ready to trash Christianity given that proximity.

“Let them do it some other time and some other place.”

But another time and other place wouldn’t serve the purpose, as militant atheist Chaz Stephens made clear when during a media event to mark the installation of the Festivus pole on Wednesday, he posed disgracefully with a case of Pabst beer thumbing disdainfully at the Nativity scene.

Stephens could have put up a “Festivus” pole in the Rotunda any time between December and May, according to “Seinfeld” rules. But only by putting it up while the Nativity scene is there could Stephens hope for any attention at all.

“What’s the point? There is no point. It’s ridiculous,” Stephens said, according to the Associated Press. “This is the most ridiculous thing I could come up with. This is about the separation of church and state.”

No, it’s not. It’s about the co-option of a basically harmless and mildly funny idea of a “Festivus” holiday into an attack on religion – the very religion that’s the bedrock of the Western culture that gave birth to the United States.

“He is not raising this display in order to celebrate a holiday, like the Christians with the Nativity scene or the Jews with the menorah,” Harry Mihet, a top attorney at Florida-based Liberty Counsel, told the Christian Post. “That’s what makes his display offensive, and why it should have been rejected, in my view.”

He’s raising it to attack Christians, to be deliberately offensive to practically the only group of people in the United States who can be attacked with impunity.

And liberals keep saying there’s “no war on Christmas?”

To them, it’s practically an article of faith.
