Hypocrisy: Dems support drug testing Congress, not welfare recipients

The men and women in the highest offices of the land should be tested to make sure they’re not getting any higher, strong majorities of Americans from both parties say.

But Democrats still don’t like drug testing for welfare recipients?

drugtest1206According to a poll conducted jointly by lefties at the Huffington Post and YouGov, random congressional drug testing gets the backing of 78 percent of those polled, while 64 percent support drug testing for those on public assistance, such as food stamps, welfare or unemployment benefits.

The HuffPo poll was conducted in the wake of U.S. Rep. Trey Radel’s conviction for cocaine possession in a Washington, D.C., courtroom in November, and is clearly a liberal shot at Radel – and by extension Republicans in general – for supporting drug-testing for welfare recipients.

It’s the kind of thing the left uses to feed the “hypocrisy” charge libs love to hurl whenever a conservative comes up less than perfect on the scale of human behavior — remember how gleefully the left took the news of Reagan Education Secretary Bill Bennett’s gambling habits? Rush Limbaugh’s pain medication problem?

Here’s the thing, though: Republicans, by HuffPo’s own poll, are at least consistent.

According to the poll, 86 percent of Republicans support drug testing for Congress. A virtually identical 87 percent supported it for welfare recipients and only 9 percent opposed it. In other words, of if you get public money, you play by public rules, and if that includes drug testing, so be it.

Among Democrats, though, the number supporting drug testing for Congress was 77 percent. That dropped to 50 percent of Democrats who think welfare recipients should be tested – and 28 percent opposed to it.

So Democrats think the kind of people with the brains, motivation, drive, and discipline to become members of Congress (from whatever party) are somehow more suspect in the area of drug use than people on food stamps, unemployment or other welfare?

That kind of thinking can only make sense to people so ideologically blinkered they’re willfully blind.

There’s a word for that, one the libs love to use: Hypocrisy.
