Fox reporter challenges State Dept. on lies over secret Iran talks; doesn’t end well

Screen Shot 2013-12-03 at 7.05.41 AMA body language expert could have a field day analyzing the reaction of the State Department spokeswoman as she fumbled her way through pointed questions from a Fox News reporter on why reporters were lied to about the years long secret negotiations with Iran.

Spokeswoman Jen Psaki kept breaking into odd, beaming smiles as Fox’s Chief Washington Correspondent James Rosen pressed her on why the State Department continually denied the Obama administration was engaged in secret talks with Iran over its nuclear program, reportedly since 2011.

Referring to a February exchange with then-State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, who answered “no” when asked if members of the administration had “direct, secret bilateral talks with Iran,” Rosen asked Psaki: “The question today is a simply one: when the briefer was asked about those talks and flatly denied them, that was untrue, correct?”

“You’re talking about a February briefing, so ten months ago. I don’t think we’ve outlined or confirmed contacts or specifics beyond a March meeting. I’m not going to confirm or outline others beyond that at this point,” Psaki answered, laughing.

Rosen was unrelenting and ultimately asked Psaki if it “was the policy of the State Department, where the preservation of the secrecy of secret negotiations is concerned, to lie in order to achieve that goal?”

“James, I think there are times when diplomacy needs privacy in order to progress. This is a good example of that,” she answered.

Although not in the following video, the exchange continued with Politico reporting:

Rosen pressed Psaki on the thinking of State Department briefers on whether it would be appropriate to mislead reporters about matters such as sensitive diplomatic negotiations.

“I’m not going to do a psychiatrists’ chair today,” Psaki declared.

“What about a couch?” Rosen shot back.
