Oprah scorns Obamacare over feud with Michelle, biographer says

The Oprah WinfreyMichelle Obama feud is in a deep freeze, and America is better off for it.

Relations between the Obamas and the woman who helped introduce Barack Obama to white America are so frigid the that the “queen of all media” wouldn’t even show up for a meeting over the summer at the White House to promote Obamacare to the masses, a New York Post column reports.

michelleoprah1020Edward Klein, author of the Obama biography “The Amateur,” writes that Obama hatchetwoman Valerie Jarrett personally called Winfrey over the summer to invite her to a White House meeting where other celebrities – comedian Amy Poehler, musician Alicia Keys and actress Jennifer Hudson – were getting briefed on how best to serve as mouthpieces for Obamacare.

Winfrey, Klein reports, turned the summons down cold.

“All of Oprah’s top people thought she would go, because when the president invites you to the White House, most people automatically say yes,” Klein quotes a Winfrey adviser as saying.

“But Oprah said she didn’t have the time or inclination to go. It wasn’t like she had to think it over. It was an immediate, flat-out, unequivocal no.”

According to Klein, Winfrey is as fed up with Michelle Obama as conservatives are – even if it is for different reasons.

“Oprah doesn’t like being with Michelle, because the first lady is constantly one-upping the president and anybody else around her,” a Winfrey adviser told Klein.

This isn’t about gossip, though, it’s about politics.

Winfrey is no conservative’s favorite, but her cultural importance is undeniable. In 2008, the year she campaigned heavily for her fellow Chicagoan to win the presidency, she was named the most influential entertainer in America by Forbes magazine.

In June, about the same time she was turning down that White House summons, she topped Forbes’ list again. Poehler came in at 92; Keyes and Hudson weren’t there at all.

Those numbers matter. With or without Winfrey’s support, Obamacare’s a train wreck. Thanks to Michelle Obama, though, Winfrey ’s not on board the hype machine.

That means a lot of other people aren’t either.
