The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is celebrating a new look to take it into the future. A new entrance, lobby, museum store and restrooms are just a part of the facelift Hedrick Brothers Construction gave the aging museum, according to a news release.

Founded in 1959 and formerly known as the South Florida Science Museum, the venue was in need of a major makeover. The Hedrick Brothers project boasts a 13,500-square-foot expansion and renovation project that includes an expanded aquarium and lab area, a renovated traveling exhibit hall and new outdoor landscaping.

Already known for its sustainable/LEED projects in South Florida, Hedrick Brothers capitalized on the museum’s energy savings with LED lighting inside and outside, Lutron lighting controls with dimming capability and other economical features.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s mission seeks “to open every mind to science through the strategic programming of interactive exhibits, engaging community-based camps and events,” according to its news release. The revitalized venue features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000-gallon fresh and saltwater aquarium with both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, Conservation Research Station, Florida Exhibit Hall and an interactive Everglades Exhibit showcasing the richly diverse ecosystem that the Everglades water-environment supports.

Located at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach, the South Florida Science Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.   For more information about the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, call 561-832-1988 or visit SFScienceCenter.org.
