ICE memo: Illegals with kids get free pass from now on

If there weren’t “anchor babies” before, there will be now.

Illegal aliens with children born in the United States shouldn’t be deported – or even arrested for immigration violations – under President Obama’s latest effort to prove he alone decides what the law is in the United States.

illegalimmigration0824In a memo, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement ordered agents to use “prosecutorial discretion” to avoid detaining parents, the Washington Times reported Saturday.

If parents are detained, the memo said, their cases should be filed in family court, and they should get visitation with their children while the cases are pending.

In May, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan took heat from some in the liberal press when he referred to “anchor babies” – children conceived by parents with the purpose of gaining an advantage in citizenship – during a town hall debate in his home state of Wisconsin.

But the ICE memo made it official – ordering ICE agents to basically look the other way when dealing with an illegal immigrant with children.

ICE field directors “shall continue to weigh whether an exercise of prosecutorial discretion may be warranted for a given alien and shall consider all relevant factors in this determination, including whether the alien is a parent or legal guardian of a [citizen] or [legal permanent resident] minor, or is a primary caretaker of a minor,” the memo stated.

Republicans called it just another example of a president who thinks he’s above the law.

“President Obama has once again abused his authority and unilaterally refused to enforce our current immigration laws by directing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to stop removing broad categories of unlawful immigrants,” U.S. Rep. Robert Goodlatte, R-Va., said in a statement.

Goodlatte has a more than passing interest in the issue. As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, he’ll be overseeing the House debate on immigration policy this fall, when a number of bills will be filed dealing with the huge immigration-reform bill the Senate passed in June.

Obama’s action Friday, Goodlatte said, “poisons the debate” before it even gets started.

Given Obama’s and the Democrats’ behavior on immigration all along, and the party’s constant pandering to Hispanic voters, that was probably exactly the idea.
