Detroit manager says no Obama bailout coming, mayor hints otherwise

Is the Obama administration planning to bail out overwhelmingly Democratic Detroit as it goes through bankruptcy proceedings?

The bankruptcy manager on Sunday said no. The mayor on Sunday hinted otherwise.

On “Fox News Sunday,” Detroit’s emergency manager Kevin Orr said the city can’t expect “the cavalry to come rushing in.”

detroitfist“We dug this hole,” he said, according to The Hill.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, on ABC’s “This Week” however, acknowledged there might be more to it.

While saying “it’s very difficult right now to ask directly for support,” Bing said conversations he’s had with “different departments within the administration” have given him hope that federal help might be forthcoming.

“I’ve had some conversation already, I’ll be more specific in the days and weeks ahead,” Bing said, under questioning from host George Stephanopolous. “I’m not sure exactly what to ask for.  I mean, money is going help, no doubt about that, but how much?”

Of course, this could be just the different ways two different men see the same situation.

Orr is a bankruptcy expert, with years in the field. He was looking at bleak situation when he took the job and is probably more used to calling dismal reality exactly what it is.

Bing, on the other hand, is largely a figurehead, a powerless mayor who draws a salary and has an office, but really serves as a symbol of the logical end where decades of union-driven contracts, and Democratic governance, will take a former industrial powerhouse.

In other words, he’s a Democratic dreamer under questioning by a fellow liberal Democrat, who could just be dreaming of the cavalry to come to save his liberal bastion from ultimate decay.

Or, he could be telling the truth, if inadvertently. Will the president who made a campaign point of saying he’d saved Detroit from bankruptcy, and made an negative advertisement out of Mitt Romney’s prophetic newspaper column from 2008 headlined “Let Detroit go Bankrupt,” really take his former rival’s advice and let Detroit go bankrupt?

Or is there already a plan in the works to use federal taxpayer money to bail out the unions that have driven Detroit to the state it’s in – and are trying to do the same to the rest of the country?

Watch the Bing video and decide for yourself. (Note: There’s a segment about President Obama’s race speech on Friday preceding Bing. If you’ve seen enough of that, skip right through it.)
