Beckel: It’s time for Obama to comment on Zimmerman trial

obama_trayvonIn March 2012, one day after race hustler Al Sharpton came to Sanford, Fla., to inflame racial tensions in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, President Obama added to the controversy when he told reporters in the White House Rose Garden: “You know, if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”

Since those early days, race has been the underlying factor driving much of the interest in the trial of the man who fired the fatal shot, George Zimmerman.

On Thursday’s “The Five” on Fox News, co-host Bob Beckel expressed his concerns about the racial tensions intrinsic to the trial and said Obama should address the complex racial issues involved in the trial and inform the public that “it’s not about black and white.”

“There is a time now, it seems to me, for the civil rights leaders and for the President of the United States — because there will be a jury decision next week — somebody will say this is not about black and white,” Beckel said.

Press secretary Jay Carney was asked Thursday if Obama was watching the trial and if he had any concerns over what the response might be after the jury renders a verdict.

“The president as you know does not spend a lot of time watching television in the day, but, you know, his comments on that are what they were, Carney said. “But we’re not going to say anything from here in the midst of the trial of that nature.”

The irony of that statement cannot be ignored when considering how often the president has said he learned of significant events, such as the IRS targeting of conservative groups, by watching the news.

As Mediaite reported, Beckel said that he believes the facts of the case indicate that Zimmerman was not motivated to shoot Trayvon Martin due to his race and that media commentators have a responsibility to not inflame racial tensions as they discuss the trial.
