An MSNBC guest claimed that President Obama got “the last laugh” when people died, suffered and lost their homes in Hurricane Sandy because it rebutted a statement made by Mitt Romney in 2012.
Salon Editor-at-Large Joan Walsh agreed with “Hardball” host Chris Matthews in Tuesday’s night’s show that Obama had delivered a magnificent speech earlier in the day when he outlined his plans to decimate the coal industry, increase unemployment and send energy costs skyrocketing, all by executive order and in the name of climate change. Well, he didn’t really describe it that way, but I’m pretty sure that’s what he meant.
Matthews then introduced a clip from the 2012 Republican National Convention, when Romney said, “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans. And to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family,” according to NewsBusters.
Matthews and Walsh seemed to find it amusing.
“There is so much in that, Joan,” Matthews said. “There is so much awfulness in that. In other words, making money in business is the sign that God loves you. Right?”
Uh, wrong. Romney said simply, “My promise is to help you and your family.” Period.
That’s not the way Matthews heard it, apparently. “That anything you do to make money in business is good, and anybody who questions that and thinks you may be hurting God’s environment which he gave us is wrong, and you can laugh at them,” he said.
Again, Matthews read a whole lot more into Romney’s statement than what was actually said. But the conversation really went over the top when Walsh commented.
“And remember how ridiculous that sounded, Chris, after Superstorm Sandy when the oceans did rise …”
Time out for a comment of my own. Ocean levels didn’t rise during Sandy — ocean waves rose, then subsided. Let’s continue.
“… and people died, and people lost their homes, and people wanted help for their families. So, you know, Obama got the last laugh.”
Obama got the last laugh because people died and lost their homes? What kind of a sick mind comes up with a statement like that?
