Air Force secretary announces Military ‘gay pride’ events in Afghanistan

Speaking at a Department of Defense LGBT Pride event at the Pentagon Tuesday, the first openly gay acting secretary of the Air Force told the gathering that “gay pride” was being celebrated at U.S. military bases the world over, including Afghanistan where homosexuality is a crime.

“This is not the DOD pride event,” said acting Secretary Eric Fanning. “They’re all over the world, including in Kandahar and Bagram this week in Afghanistan,” according to CNS News.

The U.S. State Department’s 2012 Afghanistan report indicates that,“human rights problems included … discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation”

Continuing, the report warned “The law criminalizes consensual same-sec sexual conduct activity, and there were reports that harassment, violence, and detentions by the police increased significantly during the year. No law exists to address discrimination or harassment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Homosexuality was widely seen as taboo and indecent. Organizations devoted to the protection or exercise of freedom of sexual orientation remained underground.”

GlobalGayz confirms this, reporting, “Overt homosexuality and cross-dressing have been serious crimes and became capital crimes in the 1990s.”
