Busted by ABC: Democrats wildly inflate loss of equipment at convention

Organizers of the 2012 Democratic National Convention filed a grossly exaggerated police report for lost and stolen electronic equipment, inflating some items by as mush as 62 times their fair market value.

Examples include a $75,537 claim for a stolen 13-inch MacBook Pro and an estimated $30,503 value for a lost iPhone. The total for all the items claimed in the the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was just shy of a cool half million dollars, according to ABC News.

ABC continued:

Other items reported to have gone missing at the convention included two iPads worth around $15,000 each, laptops listed at $40,000, $34,000 and $25,000 each, and other miscellaneous items worth far more than their list price.

The apparently inflated prices were reported in May with the Charlotte Police Department by Kenneth Hardy, deputy in-house counsel for the convention committee, on behalf of the DNCC Host Committee.

The report alleges that a $465,142.97loss occurred sometime between Sept. 9 to Sept. 14 but wasn’t reported until 8 months later, on May 10.

It isn’t known whether an insurance claim was or will be made for the alleged loss, but a police report is generally a prerequisite to such a claim.

ABC reported that neither the DNC nor the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to its requests for comment or elaboration.

Math is apparently hard for Democrats — so too, it would seem, is reality. We got a glimpse of this fact after income and the expenses were tallied after the two national conventions. Republicans ended up in the black; Democrats reported an $8 million loss, according to The Washington Post. But what the heck, as long as they had fun, right?

That should have been a lesson to the voters last November. The lesson didn’t take.
