Americans are no more violent than anyone else — we’re just better shots

“Barcelona’s” Fred Boynton: “But that doesn’t mean Americans are more violent than other people. We’re just better shots.”
Individuals like British CNN host Piers Morgan like to bash America as being too violent, which always makes me wonder what he’s still doing here. We’re no more violent than any other country, and America is more civilized than most.

An event that occurred a few weeks back in Morgan’s beloved England is the perfect example. Guns are illegal and pretty hard to come by there, so a couple of low-level jihadists, believing a British soldier to be an object of their venom, used meat cleavers to hack the poor man to death.

If this is Morgan’s definition of civility, he can have it.

It all brings to mind “Barcelona,” a quirky little 1994 film about Ted Boynton, a straight-laced, button-down American working in, well, Barcelona, Spain. He’s soon visited by his cousin, Fred Boynton, who, although a Naval officer, is more of-the-moment and full of life.

In a particularly memorable scene, Fred and a lady of Barcelona discuss violence in America.

“You can’t say Americans are not more violent than other people,” she insists to Fred.

“No,” Fred answers.

“All those people killed in shootings in America?”

“Oh, shootings, yes,” Fred says. “But that doesn’t mean Americans are more violent than other people. We’re just better shots.”

So what’s this all leading up to? One of the most amazing shots I’ve ever seen on video.

This incident happened a year ago, but wasn’t published until May 30.

It took place at a Texas Triggers spring event featuring Ryan Cleckner and a a Barrett .50-cal. M107 during the long range portion of the weekend.

In a single shot, Cleckner hit his target at 1,000 yards — 10 football fields, more than a half-mile — from a standing position and the rifle unsupported, or held “off-hand.”

The music is the industrial strength rock ‘n’ roll of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.”
