NYC spends $1.4 million to tell kids to lay off juice boxes

Nanny Bloomberg is at it again, and this time he’s targeting your kids. A new ad campaign sponsored by the New York City health department began on TV and buses Monday.

Spending nearly $1.4 million on the campaign, the spots say that energy drinks, sweet teas and fruit-flavored juices sound healthy, but are packed with sugar and will lead to obesity and other health problems and are geared toward kids and teens, according to CBS New York.

The Department of Health instead suggests drinking fat-free milk, seltzer or water, or eating fruit instead of drinking juice.

A court battle has ensued over the city’s ban of large sized sodas which was struck down by a judge, but the city is appealing the decision. The American Beverage Association says that the causes of obesity are over simplified by the ad campaign.

Other recent targets of Mayor Michael Bloomberg have been launching a crusade against salt, banning smoking indoors – and in some outdoor locations – and requiring calorie counts to be posted at chain restaurants.
