President Obama, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, broke with the tradition of returning the salute of the U.S. Marine outside Marine One Friday morning.

Perhaps Obama suddenly realized, or perhaps someone onboard the helicopter said something to him, because Obama promptly walked back down the steps to go shake hands with the Marine.

The president is not required to salute. However, it is a common tradition thought to have started with President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

CBS News’ White House correspondent Mark Knoller tweeted the exchange:

  1. Fred Newton says:

my experience says that all salutes are returned to giver, exceptions are when one has arms full then neither salutes. The lowest rank must initiate the salute, hold it until the higher rank returns it the the initiator drops his salute, Obama should have saluted, definitely when he went back to marine instead of hand shake!
