A 2012 video of a speech made by a gay and lesbian activist is just starting to gain some legs, and is in fact confirming what many opponents of same-sex marriage have been saying all along — that gay marriage diminishes and even destroys the concept of marriage.
Masha Gessen, author and LGBT activist, delivered her remarks almost a year ago at the Sydney Writer’s Festival while participating on a panel titled, “Why Get Married When You Can Be Happy?”
Gessen shot out of the gate by stating that “it’s a no-brainer” that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry. But then she immediately followed this up with, “I also think equally it’s a no-brainer that the institution of marriage should not exist.”
This received prolonged, spirited applause.
“Fighting for gay marriage generally involves lying about what we’re going to do with marriage when we get there,” she continued.
Gessen’s thoughts mirror those of another gay activist, Doug Mainwaring. Speaking on behalf of the National Capitol Tea Party Patriots at the National Mall when the Supreme Court was hearing oral arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act, Mainwaring said, “Same sex marriage will not redefine marriage — it will un-define it, and unravel it, and in so doing will un-define children.”
Michael Bronski is another gay who recently argued against the concept of gay marriage in a column on Belief.com.
But what distinguishes Gessen’s remarks from the others is the fact that although she supports gay marriage, she nonetheless admits that the concept is a lie.
