Jan Brewer: Sorry it offends you, ‘to me they’re illegal immigrants’

It’s a good thing Jan Brewer is a politician and not a journalist. The Associated Press recently struck the term “illegal immigrant” from its lexicon. Not so Arizona’s feisty governor — and she’s not backing down on this one.

Jan BrewerABC’s Senior National Correspondent Jim Avila sat down with the governor to discuss immigration reform legislation. Brewer indicated that she felt other border states were given better border protection.

“We don’t understand why the federal government will do that for other states, but they refuse to do it in Arizona,” Brewer told Avila. “I am not going to sit back and be the governor of the state of Arizona and not make a position for Arizona to the federal government that our border needs to be secured. It’s as simple as that.”

Avila eventually broached Brewer’s use of the politically incorrect term. “illegal immigrant.”

“I’ve heard you use the phrase over and over and over again. They’re insulted by the term, ‘illegal immigrant.’ That that brands a person. What they do is illegal immigration, but the people themselves are not illegals. Have you thought about it at all, with so many hispanics in your state? To stop using that word — illegal immigrant?”

“No, to me they’re illegal immigrants,” Brewer said.

“When you break the law, you’re doing something illegal, that makes you an illegal,” she added. “So they are an illegal immigrant.”

Avila argued that if he’d made an illegal turn, that would constitute an illegal act, “but I’m not forever an illegal driver.” Then, “It’s offensive to some people.”

“Well I’m sorry, but I believe that if you break the law and you’re an illegal immigrant and you’re in this country illegally, you are an illegal immigrant,” she said.

“We believe in the rule of law, and we can’t afford it, and we certainly can’t afford the criminal element — with Arizona having to deal with the drug cartels
