Retired Army officer warns DHS stockpiling for war against American citizens

A retired Army officer wrote to a U.S. senator Saturday about his concern that the Department of Homeland Security is preparing to arm itself against the people of the United States.

Retired Capt. Terry Michael Hestilow posted his letter to Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, on his Facebook page, noting that Homeland Security has made a number of large ammunition, weapon and light-armored vehicle purchases recently and has refused to answer questions about them.

Hestilow begins by noting the large ammunition, weapon and light armored vehicle purchases recently made by DHS, as well as that agency’s refusal to answer any questions regarding those purchases.

It is with gravest concern that I write to you today concerning the recent appropriation of weapons by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that can only be understood as a bold threat of war by that agency, and the Obama administration, against the citizens of the United States of America.  To date, DHS has been unwilling to provide to you, the elected representatives of the People, justification for recent purchases of almost 3,000 mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) armored personnel carriers, 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition (with associated weapons), and other weapons systems, when, in fact, the DHS has no war mission or war making authority within the limits of the United States of America.

The purchases are especially a concern, Hestilow suggested, in light of President Barack Obama’s 2008 assertion that the American people cannot rely solely on the military to defend the nation.

“We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set.  We’ve gotta (sic) have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded [as the United States military]”–Candidate Barack Obama, 2008.

Next, Hestilow reminds Cornyn that the military has encountered severe funding cuts in recent months. Although he didn’t mention it in his letter,  columnist David Brooks in a Jan. 7 New York Times op-ed, where  accused the president of choosing Chuck Hagel as defense chief for one reason: to dismantle the military and free up funds for social programs, particularly the underfunded Obamacare and Medicare programs.

The Obama administration is deliberately defunding, overextending, and hollowing the Department of Defense; the only legitimate agency of the U.S. government with a war mission.

Hestilow called on Congress to require Homeland Security to“immediately surrender their newly appropriated weapons of war to the Department of Defense” and dissolve the agency “as soon as possible.”

And then there’s an issue the retired captain didn’t raise: the administration’s efforts — through Congress, executive order and United Nations treaties — to limit our Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Although Hestilow was a bit too strident for my taste, it’s difficult to fault his logic.
