On Friday, first lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Stare John Kerry will jointly present awards to ten women of courage, one of whom is both an anti-semite and a supporter of the 9/11 terrorist attack on our shores.

According to a State Department press release dated Monday, “The Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award annually recognizes women around the globe who have shown exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment, often at great personal risk.”

Friday was chosen because it’s International Women’s Day. The 10 awardees represent 9 different nations, five of which are Muslim-majority, “underscoring the unique plight of women in those countries,” The Weekly Standard’s Samuel Tadros observed.

The problem lay in the Egyptian awardee, Samira Ibrahim, a woman the State Department described as:

among seven women subjected by the Egyptian military to forced “virginity tests” in March 2011 after they were detained during a protest in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

Born in Sohag, Upper Egypt, she was arrested while in high school for writing a paper that criticized Arab leaders’ insincere support of the Palestinian cause. She continues to play an active role in Egypt’s evolving political scene. Ms. Ibrahim is the coordinator of the Know Your Rights movement, which works to raise political awareness and advocate for women’s rights in Upper Egypt.

Apparently the State Department didn’t check the social media before announcing the awards.

Ibrahim described the day that a suicide bomber had killed five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver last July as “a very sweet day with a lot of very sweet news” on Twitter, after depicting the incident, according to The Weekly Standard.

A month later she tweeted an Adolph Hitler quote. “I have discovered with the passage of days, that no act contrary to morality, no crime against society, takes place, except with the Jews having a hand in it. Hitler.”

On September 11 when Egyptian protesters stormed the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and terrorists attacked our mission in Benghazi killing four Americans, she tweeted, “Today is the anniversary of 9/11. May every year come with America burning.” Noting this, someone else referred to her as a “psycho” in a tweet.

Tadros observed that “The decision to honor Ibrahim reflects poorly on the State Department, which is either incapable of doing the minimum amount of research required to find out who she is, or does not care….”

Our country was founded out of a desire to seek religious freedom, and tolerance for all faiths is a cornerstone of the First Amendment. Furthermore, the savage act of Islamic extremists in murdering almost 3,000 Americans 11 years ago was a disgrace to all civilization and all that is holy. Bestowing high honors upon Ibrahim runs contrary to everything we, as a nation, stand for.

Update:

Although Ibrahim is now claims her Twitter account was hacked and the tweets were not hers, she is returning to Egypt without an award. The real question, however, centers on the Obama administration’s vetting process.
