Political cartoon’s timing disrespects SEAL Chris Kyle’s death

Millions of Americans are mourning the loss of decorated U.S. Navy SEAL sniper and author Chris Kyle, who was laid to rest Tuesday next to fellow SEALs at the Texas State Cemetery. The funeral services were held just hours before President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address, though he failed to acknowledge the tragedy in what should have been a golden opportunity.

Kyle and friend Chad Littlefield were killed Feb. 2 by a former Marine they were helping deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Seen by many as a true American hero, Kyle served four tours in Iraq and was known as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. His efforts saved countless American lives and earned him two Silver Stars.

And yet on Wednesday, just a day after Kyle’s burial, the Charlotte Sun Herald ran a political cartoon that took an obvioius jab at Second Amendment advocates’ insistence that “good guys with guns” are the best way to stop crazy shooters. The timing of such commentary was a classless act that disrespected Kyle’s family and all who’ve served their country.

The slight also appears to be intentional. The cartoon, by Kansas City Star cartoonist Lee Judge, was originally published on Feb. 9 — three days before Kyle’s memorial service.
