Increasing number of sheriffs reject Obama assault weapons ban

Sheriff Ken Christesen

Sheriff Ken Christesen: “We’re not lawmakers, we’re sheriffs. That’s what we do, is enforce the law and defend the Constitution. We want to make sure that your rights as a citizen are protected.”

What started out as a mere trickle — a sheriff here, a state there — announcing they would not enforce any restrictive federal gun control legislation, has now become a torrent of lawmen who in support of the Second Amendment.

In Utah, all but one county sheriff responded to President Obama’s 23 firearm-related executive orders with a letter directed to him as reported by Salt Lake City ABC affiliate channel 4.

“We are prepared to trade our lives in defense of the constitution of the United States,” Summit County, Utah Sheriff David Edmunds said according to the station.

30 of New Mexico’s 33 county sheriffs traveled to Santa Fe to remind their governor and lawmakers that the oath of office they took includes a promise to protect and defend the Constitution — including the right to bear arms, according to Albuquerque’s KOB Channel 4 news.

“We’re not lawmakers, we’re sheriffs,” Ken Christesen, San Juan County sheriff told KOB News. “That’s what we do, is enforce the law and defend the Constitution. We want to make sure that your rights as a citizen are protected.”

In addition to the Utah and New Mexico Sheriff’s associations, at least 90 individual county sheriffs have said “no” to Obama’s gun control, according to the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, including Martin County, Fla. Sheriff Bill Snyder. Snyder said that although he supports stricter background checks, he’s against an outright ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, according to WPYV Channel 5 News.

Some states are also fighting back. Wyoming, Texas, Tennessee and Mississippi are among the growing number that will not enforce fede5al gun control legislation, with some even threatening to arrest federal agents who attempt to so do, as reported by the New York Times.

The final sentence of the Declaration of Independence reads, “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor.” When the signers made that pledge, they were aware they were committing treason against a tyrannical government in defense of liberty. These brave county Sheriffs and state legislatures are doing much the same. We should wish them all Godspeed.

What do you mean, "We should wish them all Godspeed"!?!!? We should be standing side by side with them! This is a struggle of We The People and not just an issue of nationwide law enforcement resisting unconstitutional over reach by a rogue and socialist regime in Washington…..What kind of B.S. statement is that, "We should wish them all godspeed"!?!?! Sounds more like a fatalistic cop out if you ask me…..

NM sheriffs. Elected officials who want to get re-elected. Hope they also will talk about this in relation to the the numbers of guns they have floating around in their state:

"The New Mexico teen accused of killing his family and plotting to gun down Wal-Mart shoppers spent much of the day after the early morning slayings at his church, wandering the campus as dozens of Sunday school teachers were being trained on how to deal with a shooter, a security official said."

This is all flash. These guys will be back ready to adjust their attitudes when they ask for federal funds for their departments. Every state seeks law enforcement block grants to assist in the departments' being able to afford extra officers and newer equipment. They are trying to make policy for the federal government. It has never worked for law enforcement officers. If they don't like the requirements of the jobs. Quit. Without the federal money, the county and state taxes will go up to pay for new offficers and equipment, or these juristictions will do without. This is all just noise. These people should pick a fight they can win.

These are true lawenforcement officers! !! I applaud all of them , they know the truth these laws don't have any effect except on law abiding citizens period. And I know a lot of people who collect military style rifles , hunt with them, defend themselves with them , and lastly target shoot with them !! And magazine capacity another false statement , In WW1and WW2 soldiers used bolt action rifles and didn't have any problems ! So magazine capacity only affects law abiding citizens. Focus on gun safety, preventing access to all firearms from those not allowed.
