Move to boycott ‘Groupon’ for abrupt new anti-gun policy

An Austin, Texas, gun instructor had his deal for discount concealed handgun license classes canceled unexpectedly last week by Groupon.

Groupon is a popular website that provides various types of discounted offers from local merchants. Deals can include dinners, entertainment, and in this case, concealed handgun license classes.

Michael Cargill, owner of Central Texas Gun Works in Austin, has been offering Groupon deals for some time, but his Tuesday-through-Saturday deal was pulled on Friday.

“On Wednesday, after the president made his speech, the deal just went crazy, and it looked like we were gonna max out,” Cargill said. When Groupon called to ask if he could raise the ceiling on the number deals offered, he did, and more than 1,000 people responded.

But on Friday morning, when his deal disappeared from the website, Cargill received a call from Groupon.

“The Groupon representative calls me up and he says that ‘Well, because of the CEO, he’s decided to suspend all Groupon deals related to handguns, concealed handguns or anything dealing with guns period.'” Cargill said.

Groupon issued the following statement to FOX 7:

“All scheduled and current gun-related deals featured on Groupon North America, including shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting, have been placed on hiatus while we review internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature. The category is under review following recent consumer and merchant feedback.”

“It’s as if people at Groupon equate anybody that believes in the Second Amendment with the armed monsters that occasionally make headlines and that’s not the people that sit here in our concealed handgun license course,” Cargill said.

Cargill has contacted his attorney to see if there is any recourse. The Groupon contract says the company can terminate a deal at any time, but with written notice, which Cargill didn’t receive.

“If we’re able to sue, then I want to sue. But if I cannot do a lawsuit or a class action lawsuit against Groupon, what I am asking…I’m asking all Second Amendment lovers to boycott Groupon,” Cargill said.
