Chuck Schumer: NRA an extreme ‘fringe group’

While membership in the National Rifle Association is reaching peak levels, adding nearly 250,000 members just last month, Sen. Chuck Schumer says it is an extreme “fringe group.”

“They sure are a fringe group, but whether enough of my colleagues are ready to admit that, I’m not sure,” Schumer said in a HuffPost Live interview. “They are a very extreme group.  They don’t even represent average gun holders.”

According to the report, Schumer said of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1994, the NRA “had such power that they filled it up with loopholes.” The Brady law required background checks for the purchase of firearms.

“Now 40 percent of the guns that are sold in America have no check, even felons can get them,” Schumer said. “If we can plug that up, that would be great.”

He said background checks would be the most likely legislation that could be passed in the “hard-right, pro-gun” House.
