Alabama PETA demonstration big flop

PETA protest
The protest staged Wednesday by PETA in Montgomery, Ala., attracted gawkers and shutterbugs, but little support.

When People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals decided to stage a demonstration outside a popular Alabama barbecue restaurant, it didn’t exactly turn out as planned.

Residents of Alabama love their good times, their football and their barbecue, and don’t you dare mess with any one of them. PETA didn’t take this into consideration when they planned their demonstration outside of Dreamland BBQ in Montgomery, Ala.

According to WAFF-48 News:

PETA members wrapped other nearly naked members in cardboard and cellophane to mimic meat packaging. Members say all animals – not just humans- are made of flesh, blood, and bone and also have the same senses and range of emotions that humans do.

“We are challenging people to really think about that ‘meat’ is,” says PETA campaigner Matt Bruce. “When you eat flesh, you’re eating the corpse of an abused animal who did not want to die. We’re encouraging kind consumers to give veganism a try.”

All the fuss didn’t seem to bother the restaurant’s management, though.

“Dreamland supports every American’s right to voice their opinion and we respect PETA’s right to stage a lawful protest outside of our Montgomery location. However we do hope that none of our guests were inconvenienced or disturbed by PETA’s display on Wednesday.

Dreamland is very proud of the product and service we have been able to provide our guest for over 50 years and we are honored to be part of a rich tradition of Alabama hospitality and great food. We thank all of our guests for being such a special part of our story.”

Worse yet (for PETA), local residents regarded the whole thing as a curiosity — a time to gather round, take a few snapshots and, well, have some barbecue. Tweets from the locals tell the story.

@xoxELYSE In downtown Montgomery? I bet that’s drummed up business.

@FlashGordon800 I know! I don’t think she thought this through.

Maybe it wasn’t a complete bust for PETA after all. Montgomery is known for its warm, Southern hospitality. I’m sure that when it was all over, Dreamland invited them inside and offered them all free slabs of ribs, hush puppies and cole slaw.
