New year, new laws take effect in several states

As 2013 rolls in, so do new laws in several states across the country, taking effect on Jan. 1.

In Florida, it is no longer illegal to flash your headlights warning other drivers of police in the area, if you own a swamp buggy, you are no longer required to register it as a motor vehicle, and new reporting requirements will take effect for car insurance. Personal injury reform designed to save money requires that injuries be reported within 14 days, or they are not covered.

Also in Florida, along with 10 other states, many will get a pay raise due to an increase in the minimum wage.

According to a WPTV report, the following also took effect at midnight in other states:

In Illinois and California, employers may no longer force their employees to provide their passwords to the social media accounts.

The same is true if you are applying for a job in either one of those states.

And speaking of job seeking, in Oregon, employers are no longer allowed to post a job opening, unless they’re willing to hire the unemployed.

In Maryland, Arsenic is banned in chicken feed. Why? Well, it’s a measure to help protect the Chesapeake Bay from any toxins.

California is now banning any treatment aimed at changing the sexual orientation of someone that is under the age of 18.

If you are a shark fan, you’re going to like this one: There’s a law in Illinois that may help protect that species. The sale, trade, and possession of shark fins is illegal in Illinois.

In Kentucky, it is now illegal to release a wild hog into the wild.

Update: It was mistakenly reported that the Florida law pertaining to flashing lights was illegal, but it is actually no longer illegal.
