The following was read by NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre at a National Rifle Association press conference held on Friday Dec. 21 featuring LaPierre and former Congressman Asa Hutchinson, who is heading up the association’s proposed National School Shield Program to place armed guards in every American school:
How have our nation’s priorities gotten so far out of order? Think about it. We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses — even sports stadiums — are all protected by armed security.
We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers.
Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent and vulnerable members of the American family — our children — we as a society leave them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it. That must change now!
The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters — people so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can possibly ever comprehend them. They walk among us every day. And does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn’t planning his attack on a school he’s already identified at this very moment?

All the polls we hear about sample a few hundred to a few thousand nationwide to tell us what the majority is thinking.
I understand what you are saying – however just how do you suggest protecting the children. In most cases (dating back 75+ years) the persons that committed these atrocious acts were not on police radar for any reason. They were not called sociopaths until the act had been committed. As has been stated the ONLY way to deal with a bad guy with a gun (same can be said for a knife or firebomb or other destructive weapon) is a good guy with a gun. If you have any viable options that work – state them, because I sure don’t. As to banning firearms – the criminal or sociopath doesn’t care what is legal, does he. You might as well put up another sign at the “gun free” zones, stating “Criminals not allowed in with guns”. Criminals are currently Illegally armed – how many do you really think will turn in there firearms if another law is passed?
I read a comment that an armed guard at school is just like putting kids in prison…. Sure sounds better than piling all our kids in a barrel and rattling a high powered rifle off in it. guns are not the problem the people behind them are but until u get the people dealt with our kids need protected! and I know giving my kids a way to protect themselves is illegal so someone has to do it for them.
No, the kids should carry their own guns. We have too many kids now!!!

i believe teachers have the right to have a firearm handy to protect the children as well as their self..as for having only one guard..he would have a lot of ground to cover..plus one guard can be taken out ..just my opinion
So have as many guards as needed. They don’t have to be cops. The schools could directly hire armed security personnel.
Most schools in Cities in Indiana already have full time police presence in them. Just need to allow them access to a firearm So, there should be a zero increase in cost.
My sons high school has a cop with a gun at all times. Police are not prohibited from carrying when they are working on school grounds in Indiana.
Airports, malls, movie stars, politicians, many businesses, government buildings, and countless other places guarded with armed personnel, as parent who wants my kids to be safe at school i’m completely baffled why the issue of armed guards is such taboo. Maybe they should carry concealed if people are concerned it disrupting a child’s learning ability.
It might be impossible to put armed guards in all schools as the cost would be prohibitive, but if we arm responsible people, like school administrators and teachers, who are thoroughly trained in the safe use of firearms, we could accopmplish what the NRA has proposed without the prohibitive cost of hiring special armed guards. We do this now by giving airline pilots the right to be armed to prevent highjackings and senseless harm to their passengers. There seems to be no bad effects, so why can’t some responsible, trained personnel in the schools be armed as well? Can you imagine if someone, or a few people, had a gun at one of those recent violent rampages at Army camps, college campuses, movie theaters, and public schools, to be able to confront those psycho’s with a firearm before the police were able to respond to the carnage, what might have been the result? It might not have prevented the the initial attack, but it most likely would have mitigated the killing of the innocents. Liberals, stop with the knee-jerk response of banning guns after each one of those horrific events occur, let common sense prevail and not just emotion of the act itself. Banning guns is not the answer, arming responsible citizens is.
No-one is suggesting banning guns except Chuck Lehmann and fear-mongering gun sellers.
EXACTLY CHUCK… If only there was someone trained in firearm use to TAKE OUT the SICK kid, the killings COULD have been avoided. The MSMedis IS PATHETIC in its GOSSIP NEWS reporting, AND they ALMOST NEVER report on the number of lives SAVED EVERYDAY, YES, EVERYDAY, by someone that had a C.W.P. to ward off or fire on a PERP & thereby saving a life. But, it’s NOT NEWS-WORTHY. GOD help us in the future fight to PRESERVE OUR GOD-GIVEN, NOT GOVERNMENT SUPPLIED, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS TO BEAR ARMS.
If we listen carefully to the NRA statement, it’s very well done, and correct. The teachers in Israel are usually armed and we see no such issues in their country…Certainly not in the schools in any case?
Yeys, we need an armed guard in our schools. We have a way to notify the law when someone tries to rob a bank and akso have armed guards. Is our money more important than our children??????

Yesterday, …he’s UNDERCOVER, but a customer of mine, so I know him. There is a SIGN in the window of the CHASE BANK I do business with, saying ‘ARMED GUARD ON DUTY”…OPEN YOUR EYES, you MIGHT SEE, unless YOUR BLIND…then, I apologize.
We should arm everyone and have the children wear suits of armor to school. They wear some very sloppy outfits as it is and if they had shiny armor they would look better as well. And any student over the age of 12 should also carry a loaded weapon in case a teacher goes a little nuts or threatens them with an F. We should also add a shooting range to all athletic fields so the teachers and kids can practice on a daily basis. The only way to teach our kids how to behave in a civil society is to surround them with as many weapons as possible. The liberals may not like it but if they protest and make us feel threatened by their act we can shoot them.

Obviously more guns is not the solution, any rational human being would know that, but what would any sensible person expect from the gun manufacturers and distributors lobby? Sell more guns! and the NRA did not dissapoint.
Lets see what you would do watching your wife, daughter, mother being RAPED in front of your eyes BECAUSE YOU DIDNT HAVE A WEAPON TO DEFEND YOURSELF like it states in the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution. IF ONLY THE PRINCIPAL HAD A HANDGUN TO SHOOT THAT MENTALLY ILL PSYCHO, WE WOULDNT BE WRITING IN THIS BLOG.

Guards, armed teachers and/or armed principals? Absolutely NOT! That said, schools need more officers. They need an officer at every elementary school and, in middle and high probably two minimally each. The school police can also act as mentors. (Many do that already.) It is time also to explore putting the school police under the sheriff. We cannot legislate crazy people off the streets, but we can make our schools safer.
