Google “Doodles” are those fun graphics we see posted on Google’s home page that make up the Google logo. Google started using Doodles to commemorate birthdays of famous people, holidays or important events in history. The first Google Doodle was created in 1998.
This year, Google partnered with the New York Public Library and Crayola for the “Doodle 4 Google 2012” contest.
Students were invited from all across the country to use their artistic talents to create a new Doodle. The theme for the contest was “If I could travel in time, I’d visit…”
The entries were broken out by grade levels: K-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12. The winners were placed in four categories: 250 state finalists (50 from each grade level), 50 state winners (10 from each grade level), 5 national finalists (1 from each grade level) and 1 national winner.
The lucky national winner’s Doodle is featured on Google’s home page, he was awarded a $30,000 college scholarship to the school of his choice, a trip to New York for an event held on May 17th, a Google Chromebook computer, a Wacom design tablet, a t-shirt printed with his Doodle on it. His current school will also receive a $50,000 technology grant to go toward the improvement of the school’s technology program or computer lab. The winning artwork will appear on a limited edition of Crayola’s iconic “64 Box”.
