Crist Really Going Independent?

Due to Florida Governor Charlie Crist’s recent veto of Senate Bill 6, many political insiders are discussing the rumor that he may run as an Independent in the race for the U.S. Senate.  Below lists a recent article by Erick Erickson in Redstate.com as well as a video of Charlie Crist’s own words where he and Marco Rubio appeared on FoxNews Sunday with Christ Wallace on March 29th, 2010, debating many issues. Gov. Crist dispelled rumors during that show by assuring Wallace he was running as a Republican and no intentions of leaving the Republican party.

Florida political pundits have been saying for a few weeks that if Charlie Crist vetoed a Republican backed measure pushed heavily by Jeb Bush to reform Florida public education, it would be a strong sign Charlie Crist would bolt the GOP.

Well, Crist vetoed it. The legislation would have made it easier to remove bad teachers and was heavily opposed by teachers unions. Crist chose to side with teachers unions rather than the parents groups that wanted the new law to improve teacher performance.

Now Crist’s campaign chairman is bolting.  Former Senator Connie Mack rode through the storm with Crist and is using the veto of this legislation as his excuse to get out while the getting is good.

I find it hard to believe this of all thing would be the straw that broke Connie’s back. Maybe Crist really is going independent.

On March 27, 2010, Gov. Charlie Crist and Speaker Marco Rubio squared off on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.  During that interview, and in the video below at 15:10, Wallace asked, “Are you willing to pledge right here, right now that you are planning to run in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate and not run as an Independent?”

“I’m running as a Republican”, he answered.  See more of his answer by fast forwarding to 15:10 into the video below:
